Hello again everyone!!! Bekki here - 19 year old Bekki!!! Lol. Now where did we leave you… at a campsite in Port Douglas methinks! So…
Sunday was a lazy day - the campsite was really nice and so was the weather so spent the morning lazing around by the pool! Catching rays! Went to a funky café for lunch called MangoJam!!! Their famous Mango Daiquiris were on special so we kind of treated ourselves - very impressed!!! Supermarket trip after lunch then more lazing around! We had wi-fi so made the most of that in the evening.
Monday was one of the highlights of the entire trip!!! We went snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef!!! OH MY GOD!!! It was soooo amazing! The boat tour we went with, Calypso, was recommended by a lady we met whilst kayaking and she was so right to recommend them. The crew were really nice (and they had lots of nice young guys for me!!) and the food was lovely. We stopped off at 3 different dive sighs - and Tim went scuba diving at the first 2 while me and Dan snorkelled. At the first site they had the most massive fish - called Marvin! No idea what type he was but was the same size as me roughly! Got our photo taken with him and he felt sooo smooth! Incidentally, the salt water is absolutely disgusting! Have never tasted such salty waer in my life! Hurts your lips & mouth after a while (well it hurt mine because I kept inhaling the water - bad move!). At the second site we were given a snorkelling tour of the reef which Dan went on but I got too distracted! We had rented an underwater digital camera and I took loads of pictures! Everything I saw I had to get a snap of so I kind of fell behind off the tour and decided to give up! I ended up just floating around the coral watching the sea creatures! Dan & Tim went back in for lunch along with almost everyone else on the boat but I stayed out for a bit longer! It turns out that when everyone disappears, all the fish come back out!!! I floated on top of the coral again and there were hundreds of fish right up close to me! Amazing! Found a shoal of these really small silvery fish that you could herd by swimming around them! Had great fun for a while! The third sight was probably the coldest - the other 2 had really been quite warm. I saw some nemo's here! Got some pictures but they are a bit blurry I think. Never mind… Spent our first night so far NOT in a campsite! Quite creepy but otherwise ok.
Tuesday was pretty boring - travelled for a looong time (about 10 hours!) down to Airlee Beach. Arrived in darkness and on the way we killed a bat! It was awful! Just flew out of nowhere straight into us! Did our washing and I hung mine on the line because they didn't dry properly in the tumble dryer (this is significant later - try and guess why!!)
Wednesday was pretty good - took a day trip to the Whitsunday Islands. Visited 3 - Long, Daydream & South Mole. All gorgeous! Spent most of our time relaxing in sunloungers or in the hot tubs! Plus they had cheap cocktails so we indulged ourselves a bit! Even got a cocktail from the pool bar! Sweet as! Our tour guide was a bit strange - talked about taking clothes off a lot! Never mind! We then travelled down to Mackay (about 1 ½ hours), stopped at some toilets and… b*****!! I suddenly remember all of my clothes were still hanging on a line back at the Airlee beach resort!!! AAAAAHHHHH! Woops! So we drove half the way back before parking in a layby to sleep for the night!!! Luckily they forgave me!!
Thursday was a travelling day again - back to get my washing first (yay - it was still there!!) and then down to a farm called Myella where we worked the next day (it's near Rockhampton). We had to start taking our anti-malarials today! Yummy! Ridiculously bitter but at least they are small enough for me to swallow!! The guys went to bed at about 9 but I stayed up and wrote in my journal. Did this while lying in a hammock staring up at the gorgeous night sky! You will not believe just how beautiful the sky looks when there is no light around for miles!!! So clear! Plus I was joined by Coops - the most gorgeous little Joey the owners of the farm are hand rearing!!! We name her after you Coops!!! She really was soooo adorable! Came and sat beside me for an hour before I left and let me fuss her!! Brilliant evening!
Friday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! Totally forgot it was my birthday during the day as I was so busy and having such a fab time! Started by opening my birthday card from Coops - thankyou!!! Much appreciated!! Then milked a cow and bottle fed a calf - after getting into real cowgirl & guy outfits!! Then we went for a 2 hour horse trek in the outback - saw lots of LIVE kangas here!! Hooray! After lunch we were taught to ride motorbikes!!! Only 80cc ones and we were only allowed to go at 35kph (but pretty sure we hit at least 50 when they weren't looking!) but it was amazing! Speeding off down the dirt roads! We then got chatting to some other travellers who we went with the herd the cows back into their paddock for the night. Then we were allowed to take the bikes out on our own to ride to a spot where you could get a perfect picture of the sunset! Was gorgeous!! Dan missed it though because about a minute before it set decided he would race it - tried to run back to the bike and ride all the way to the farm and back!!! Needless to say he missed it by miles - but never mind! We had pictures to show him! Spent the evening singing cheesy songs with our fellow travellers and playing with an adorable Border Collie puppy!
Saturday was mostly boring - more travelling down to Hervey Bay. In the evening we out for a birthday meal courtesy of my darling Nan! Thanks Nanny M!! We had a lovely Mexican! On the walk back to the campsite we passed a pub that was playing 'Agga-doo-doo-doo'!!! And we had just bought a pineapple!! Co-incidence? We thought not so of course used it as a prop while dancing down the street! Crazy people we are!
Sunday was our trip to Fraser Island. Nice day but we weren't sure why everyone raves about it so much!! It was nice but preferred the Whitsundays (may have had something to do with the cocktails though!). We visited Central Station, 75mile beach (which is actually only about 52miles - lol), Airlie creek, the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles (coloured sand dunes) and last (but not least) Lake Mackenzie. THE most gorgeous lake ever! With really really fine white sand! Again, our tour guide was a bit strange - have decided it must just be a tour guide thing!
Monday was mostly travelling - although we stopped off at Rainbow beach for a gander! Not too exciting - Dan went for a swim while me and Tim read for a while.
Anywho, missing you all loads still! Plus looking forward to the Philippines - probably where our next blog entry will be coming from! Can't believe we are leaving Australia already!!
Love love
Bekki & Dan
