Becky's Trip to Oz & NZ
Hi again! On Thursday we drove about 30 minutes south to Fox Glacier. Its pretty much the same as Franz in that there is a glacier and a small town so we only needed a few hours. We drove to Lake Matheson and had a walk and took some photos and then went and had some tea in the town. Then we drove to the glacier and took some photos from the base, we didn't walk it this time! lol. Then we headed back to the hostel and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening watching films and tv in the common room.
On Friday we drove to Queenstown. It was roughly a 5 hour drive. We broke it up by stopping at Wanaka for lunch in the 'Cheeky Monkey' cafe and went to the beach. We got to Queenstown at around 4.30pm. We had some trouble trying to find a hostel as Queenstown is the skiing capital of NZ and as it was the weekend everyone had headed this way too. In the end we got a room in a 4 bed door sharing with a danish girl called Stina. That night we booked some things for the weekend, had a walk round the town and had an early night.
Yesterday morning we walked to the base of the gondalas and rode on it to the top of one of the mountains. You have a great view from up there. Up there we then got on a chairlift and had some rides on the luge (mum, dad & Lou - we did these in singapore, remember? Very good fun!) then we went and had a drink before taking some photos of the view and getting the gondala back down. Our hostel room has the best view EVER. We overlook a huge lake which has snowcapped mountains in the background, its amazing! I hope I've made you all very jealous now! lol.
I then had one of the best afternoons here since we started the trip, Lou you are going to be very jealous, I went horseriding!! I got picked up at 1.30pm and we went out in the country to a ranch and went on an afternoon hack. It was brilliant. There was 10 of us in the group - one family of 4, another girl who had never ridden before and 5 'wannabe gansta' boys. It was amusing! I was on a horse called Eagle. We were taken right through the countryside, over hills and rivers, we were right next to wild deer and sheep and we had the snowcapped mountains in the background, it was really picturesque. As I'd riden before I asked one of the guides if I could go a bit faster as was getting a bit bored of just walking so she took me to one side and we went for a trot and then a canter in a field. We ended up by a fence which she opened and then said to me that I could go off on my own and do what I want and to meet them at another fence later. So I did! I cantered right through the valley and up this hill, stopping at the top so I could take some pics. It was quite amusing as I stopped right by a flock of sheep who looked as me as though I'd just landed from space! Don't think they knew what to make of me! So I really liked having the freedom to do what I want, and Eagle loved it too, that was clear from the speed! lol. But managed to stay on! Seems riding is one of those things you don't forget how to do! lol. So then I rejoined the group and we carried on. The wannabe boys were getting very annoying as kept trying to show off and go fast but didn't have a clue what they were doing. The guides were getting really annoyed with them, especially as they couldn't even speak english!
Last night we went out with our roomate Stina. We went to her friend Sarahs house as its her bday and then we met some others and headed to Monty's, a bar in town. Me and Ali got talking to 3 Ozzy guys and spent the rest of the night with them as seemed to lose everyone else throughout the night! lol. It was a good night though. One of the guys works in Sea World in the shark tanks!
Not sure what the plan is for today as did book whitewater rafting but they only run it if theres enough people and we haven't heard back yet. Tomorrow we drive to Christchurch.
Have a great weekend xxxxxx
