Hi everyone
Well I think that the last time I wrote I was in Lake Wanaka, from there we went to Franz Josef glacier a really tiny town surrounding yes u guessed it a glacier!!
The weather lived up to the New Zealand "wet" name when we were there as it rained for 2 of the 3 days we were there and it was cloudy and dull the whole time!!! This did mean that I was not able to do my heli-hike which I was really excited about!!! I would have got a helicopter to the top of the glacier and then wandered for a bit and then got a helicopter back. It was cancelled twice though because of the weather which was a real shame!! Not much else to report from Franz Josef except Han was disgusted because they didn't even have a hairdressers! The hostel we stayed in "glow worms" was really cute, it had a hot tub and also the room was like a bed-sit with a small kitchen area, they also did free soup which we sampled on the first night- not sure it was soup it was watery more like stock!!! (Not a patch on your soup Dad)
We then moved onto Hokitika, another small town on the West coast of the South island where the difference in weather was amazing-fantastic sunshine!! (This country is weird drive a few hours and the weather can change so much!!) We also visited Punkatiki where the Pancake rocks and blowholes are which were cool but not much else to say about that really!
The others went white water rafting and I had the day to myself in a place with nothing to do, I sat out on a park bench on the side of the beach for most of the day and managed to get a lovely bit of sunburn on my back and much to everyone elses amusement major strap marks!!! (Will need to sort those out in Thailand)
The guys that ran the white water rafting invited us to a party on the beach that evening and even provided us with a tent! However, apparently "Carolina" (Andy's car) did not want to go as she refused to start so Freya, Han and me were "trying" to push the car to get it started but it wasn't going too well (I even lost my shoes in the process-luckily as its a quiet town no other cars came to run them over and I managed to get them back) and some locals came over to help! (Thank god-we had no clue-opened the bonnet and gazed into it!!!) Bit scary at first as one of the guys had sex and hate tattoos but they were actually the nicest guys-got their mate to come over with his car and jump started it! (We then invested in some jump leads!!)
We got to the beach and it wasn't so much a party (there were about 5 guys there) but we went to the pub where a "Kiwi experience bus" had just pulled up. I have heard things about the kiwi experience and this was all confirmed. It is a massive shag fest!!! Later on we went down to the lake and there were people getting it on everywhere it was bad so we went back to the beach.
I am proud to say that we (somehow) managed to start a fire from just wood and tissue paper and of course a lighter!! However the other English people (Ian and Katie) that we met had more to do with it!!
The next day (after getting jump started by Kaie's camper van) we headed off to Blenheim.
Blenheim is the centre of the Malborough wine district so it would have been rude not to go wine tasting!! Very good day-even went to Cloudy bay. However, this was not the nicest wine.
We have just arrived in Kaikoura and are planning to go swimming with Dolphins and sample some crayfish!!!
Better go
Will write again soon
Lots of love B xxx
