We reached Phnom Penh after 14 hours of travelling on the bus and it was all worth it. Phnom Penh is alot bigger than siem reap but a cool city. Theyare loads of street stalls selling the traditional Kymer (Cambodian food) food-fried spiders, crickets, and any other bug you are able to catch and fry (you are probably wondering why the heck people here eat these things, but it all stems back to their history of the genocide here when they had to eat anything they could find to stay alive). We didn't actually get around to trying any of these local delicacies but Im sure they are quite nice! Another typical thing you see here in Cambodia are Cyclos which are like a wheelchair attatched to a bike..they are soo cool!
Prepare yourself for a not so lighthearted blog Im afraid because even though Phnom Penh is an amazing place to shop and look around, most tourists don't go to Cambodia's capital for the shopping or light hearted strolls around the city, most come to dig deeper into Cambodia's herrendous history-the Killing fields.
Our knowledge of Cambodia's past was very limited so we made sure we watched the film 'the killing fields' at our hostel before we went to the museum which did really help. First we went to visit the S-21 museum, which is a school which they turned into a prison during the Kymer rouge regime (the people that took over and were responsible for the genocide). Here they put anyone who was against the Kymer rouge and tortured them. They were then all sent off to the killing fields for imediate execution. It was horrendous to see and I felt physically sick hearing some of the stories. We then headed to the killing fields just outside of Phnom Penh where they sent these prisoners. That again was horrific as we got to see some of the skulls and mass graves there. It has a really bizarre feel when you go there as there is a school right next door where you can hear children laughing and playing together. As hard as it was all to see, I'm am really glad we went there as I don't think anyone should visit Cambodia and leave blind to what went on in the past.
We did do some easier to digest sightseeing as well there by going to see the royal palace, which was pretty amazing to see and bizarre to think you can wonder around where the royal family are living!
We only had less than 2 days in Cambodia before having to go back to Bangkok. Despite being short, it was definately worth the trip to Cambodia though as it's a beautiful country with beautiful people and I definately reccomend going there if you haven't already been.
