Well well well.... Where to begin with Rio De Janeiro...
What a beautiful, bright and friendly city. Arriving on Sunday after a long 24 hour bus journey from Iguazu we made it to our hostel El Misti Rio. In true spirit to see the most of the city we dropped our bags off and went straight off to one of the free walking tours around the Copacocobana and Ipanema area. All along the beach we learnt about the history of the coastline and got to try some authentic brazilian snacks and drinks, the Capirinha! Arriving back at the hostel we bumped into our English friends we had made on a night out back in Argentina who had told us to stay there. After a seriously intense card game of s*** head with them they invited us on a road trip they had been planning, Yes the next day we were off in Britney, the VW retro camper van we had rented with enough supplies to feed all 7 of us, up 20 miles along the coast of Rio. Ida and Hippie were two lovely girls that the boys had met back at the start of their travels and had rejoined back in Rio! That night we stayed up until sunrise and fell asleep on the beach to then wake up to the waves and go for a swim! The most amazing part was we had the whole beach to ourselves. That afternoon we headed back to the Hostel were a serious nap was needed and then as it was Ida birthday we found an all you can eat pizza place and my golly did we eat a lot of pizza!! But sweet pizza too with white chocoloate and peanut butter on top!! The next Jess and I decided to get back into the tourist mentality and went on the other free walking tour around the area of Lapa. What we thought would be a 2 hour walk ended up being 5 hours as we saw every square and important area of the city finishing with a traditional Brazilian lunch with the tour guides and other tourists!! Absolutely shattered we thought we could squeeze in a quick nap but then we saw our dirty washing load! So after completing all our domestic duties we got straight on to the Capirinhas and got ready for a good night out in the city. By that point you would think we would have past out from exhaustion but nope.... we stayed and watched the sunrise over Copacobana beach and of course went fully clothed into the sea. We got back to the hostel at 8am, had showers, got breakfast and all set off for our 2 hour hike UP to Christ the Redeemer!! I spent most of the hike on all fours.. that is how steep it was! On 0 hours sleep we ploughed through right to the top and saw the amazing views of Rio!!! Definitely worth it! Although the bus back down was a great shout! That night we all completed passed out as the next day we were off the beautiful Island of Ihla Grande. Up at 5:30am to start our trip was an interesting start to the day! Everyone was still so exhausted but when we finally arrived at the Island, all of that was forgotten! We walked 20 mins to find a beautiful bay where we played Volleyball and swam in the warm water! Unfortunately Jess and I were only there that one night as we had to leave Brazil the next day. That night we found a great sushi restaurant to satisfy our calamari craving and then on to a kebab/wrap restaurant!! mmmmmm.... The next day we had a few hours before having to head back to Rio so we got a speed boat to the other side of the Island and ended up on surfers paradise beach of Lopes Mendes. So sad having to leave everyone and what a great group we were!!! Jess and I got what looked like Captain Jack Sparrows boat back to Rio, collected our belongings and headed off to start our trip to Bolivia. Stop number 1 bus to Sao Paulo airport to La Paz.
We have now been in La Paz for a night and have spent today on an amazing walking tour that has taken us around whilst teaching us about the Bolivian culture which is so interesting to say the least.
Tomorrow it is time to take on Death Road by Bike!!! Yes we are riding down 38km of the Worlds most dangerous road..........
