Firstly I have to apologise that this blog has not been updated since Scotland and I have done so much since then it's crazy.
London I've got to say is a pretty cool city. The day I arrived from Scotland it was actually quite warm which I wasn't expecting and luckily for me it was good weather for the 4 out of 6 days I was there, so I really can't complain too much.
Pretty much the whole time I was there it was definitely go go go everyday.
Day 1: Seeing as the weather was suprisingly nice for London I thought it would be a good idea to check out the Buckingham Palace and watch the changing of the guards. When I got there, as expected there was a pretty big crowd, but luckily enough I was still able to get a good spot. The precision went on for an hr, and it's definitely something I'd recommend doing if you ever come to London. This was definitely the tourist moment for me, when it finally hit me that I was in London and outside the palace. Was very surreal.
The day was still young, so I decided to check out the Tower Of London and the Tower Bridge. I have to admit the Tower of London was a lot bigger then I had expected, so needless to say spent a fair bit of time here. The history within this place dates back to 1000's so obviously had a lot to see and do. The crown jewels are kept here and they are beautiful, but unfortunately couldn't take any photo's of them, as they apparently have to protect the Queen's rights.
I think I may have went a little overboard with the pics of the Tower Bridge, but then again I'm a tourist so it's expected. The bridge was great and I was able to go up to the obvservation level and got a good view of the surrounding areas. Definitely picked the right day for it.
Day 2: Another beautiful down in London town, so I went to the big ferris wheel near Westminster called the London Eye. The views from here were fantastic. Just incase you don't know the seating on this is nowhere near the same as a normal ferris wheel, they are actually big spacious capsules. The highest point on this is 135m above ground level and takes about 30mins to do the full loop. With the sky being as clear as it was you could see pretty far out, so definitely money well spent on this.
Seeing as the Aquarium was pretty much right next do, I thought I would see what it was like. This I really wouldn't recommend to anyone. It was really disappointing.
After the s*** Aquarium I thought I would just take a wander around and I ended up at Trafalgar Square. Just a little tip, don't visit here around lunch time, cos the crowd is just huge, and I guess it being a nice day out the London people were making the most of it. The area itself is quite beautiful so even though I was there when it was packed it was a good atmosphere.
Day 3: This was the day that I climbed up around 300 stairs to reach the top of St Paul's Cathedral (the place where Charles and Di got married), and even though the legs wanted to kill me while I was doing it, it was really worth while in the end. Once again the view from here was pretty good, but unfortunately the day wasn't as clear as the past 2, but it was still good enough. Obviously once I was finished at the top I then had to walk back down the 300 stairs, but this was definitely the easy part of the whole thing. I don't have any pics of this Cathedral as we were not allowed to, which is a real shame because I could've got some fantastic shots.
Once I finished up at the Cathedral it was only around 11am, so I then took off to the next destination for the day which was the London Zoo.
Now this was a pretty good zoo, even though Taronga back home is still better. I'm just thankful it wasn't disappointing like the Aquarium.
Day 4: Well the weather has decided it has been too nice for too long, so it went back to the normal of cold and wet. Not a great day to do much, but seeing as I only had 6 full days, really can't waste them.
So in saying that I went to Kensington south and took a look around the Kensington Palace (today accomodates the office and apartments of some of the royal family). Samw story here no camera allowed, so you will just have to believe me when I say that I've been there. I was fortunate that they currently have a photo exhibition here of Princess Diana, which was beautiful, so that was definitely a highlight.
Even when I finished at the Palace it was still pretty crap weather outside, so I do what a lot of people do when it rains and that was shopping. I got the tube (which mind you kicks Sydney's train system's ass by an absolute mile. Although one down fall it's not cheap), and went to the famous Oxford Circus. Felt like this street just went on forever, and pretty much had every shop you could think of. Let me tell you though that people in London go crazy when it comes to shopping. After about an hour I was going crazy, so I thought I would head off to Picadilly Circus (doing all the destinations on the Monopoly board)
Right on the main street you've got the massive TV screens showing commercials and also with big Coke signs. If you're ever in London and want to see a stage show, then this is the place to go. Little tip though, don't buy your tickets in advanced, cos if you rock up on the night you can get them for half price. Luckily I will be back there for a day in August before taking off to NY so I will get to see a bit more.
Day 5: This was the day I went to Westminster and visited the Westminster Abbey (this is where all but 2 of the Kings since William the Conqueror have been crowned) . Once again could've got some great pics, however no camera were allowed. I have to say they definitely have some of the most beautiful churches in London.
Once I finished here I decided to go check out what all the fuss is about with Harrod's, and now I can understand. This department store is just bloody huge. It's just amazing, and I've never seen anything like it. Felt completely out of place here, but I don't think I was the only one. One pair of shoes I liked would've totally blown my whole trip out of the water and I would've had to come home the next day, so hopefully that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about. In saying that though I did get a souvenir from here which was a teddy bear name the 'Rebecca Bear' and it was on sale, so I really couldn't leave it sitting there. So now I can say that I went to Harrods and got something. Tick that off my list of things to do.
Day 6: On my last day in London I thought I would chill a little, as I pretty much saw everything that I wanted to see. I decided to go on a hr river cruise along the River Thames, which was really nice. Went past a lot of the sites again, so it was a good thing to do.
After this I decided I had to see the very famous Abbey Road (I really had no accuse not to as it is only one tube station away from the hostel I was staying at). Did the tourist thing there which was cool.
Not far from there I walked down to Lord's cricket ground. Unfortunately I couldn't go in, but got a picture from the outside, so it's all good.
After 6 full days in London it was finally time to move onto another city by the name of Paris.
