Well hello Hawaii! it seems that one tropical paradise just ins't enough for a girl, so here i am in Sunny Waikiki! I arrived here last week after a sad goodbye to Fiji and all the amazing friends I made there :( It's very difficult to complain about things over here, but if I could just import all my lovely Fiji friends here with me, Hawaii would be absolutely perfect!
Hawaii is not what I expected, well Waikiki isnt! I was foolishly expecting the laid back charm of fiji with it's deserted beaches and calm resorts and horizontal chilled out people! whoa..Waikiki is a buzzing, crazy tourist metropolis, I wouldn't say I dislike it, but it's definately no Fiji! I spent my first 3 nights here in Waikiki, getting to know the town and seeing the beach, and trying to plan my escape! It wasn't very hard, the busses are brilliant here, you can get the whole way around the island of Oahu for $2.50. We decided to head north, to the North shore no less.
The North Shore is a surfers paradise, they flock there due to the bloody crazy big waves! myself and my friend Other Becks attampted a swim, but kept being deposited rather ungracefully up the beach by the strong waves with practially the whole beach in out bikini bottoms. possibly not one of my finest moments! I looked like a sand covered beached whale. We spent 3 nights up there too in these crazy little shacks, they looked like they had been abandoned years ago, the fridge was rust coloured and there were cockroaches living in my room, suprisingly this is not the worst place I've stayed, so I actually didnt mind, what I did mind was being charged $31 to stay there a night. They are the only hostel outside of Waikiki so they can do what the heck they like, and if they want to charge the earth for staing in a rusty shed, they can do! It was all fun though and we had a laugh, which is the main thing. We visisted the local town and went for bike rides and played on the beach! it was a lot of fun. If it didnt cost so much I imaging I would stll be up there right now.
I returned to Waikiki on Saturday, and seem to have fallen for the place, I didn't see that coming, I love to tourist beach and the tacky shops, the food market and the busy streets, it has it's own charm and has a real nostalgic feel to it. I had an amazing evening on monday Night (for my Mum's Birthday) I signed myself up for a sailing trip around the cove on a catamaran. It started well, if slightly overcast, but then the Heavens opened and a full on storm hit Waijiji Beach and our little boat! we were tossed around and soaked to the skin. the captain had to turn the boat around and look for land, which had all dissapeared in a huge cloud of rain! It was thundering and lightening, there was one particually loud crackle of lightening, and I overheard a crew man telling another that he thought that one had hit us! aaargg! I am 4 weeks from coming home, I do not want to sink to the bottom of the sea thank you! well anyway, we didn't and we made it back safe and sound, and the captain told us to come back for a free trip because that one was a bit s***! I've not redeemed it yet, the weather has been a bit iffy and i don't fancy chancing it again! I got on land and that's when it really stareted to rain! I was soaked to my knickers in a matter of seconds! I was supposed to meet my frinds Mara for drinks that evening, and assumed that we would cancel, but as I was passing her hostel decided to drop in and say hi! We decided to brave the weather and go out to a bar which was roumoured to do 75c beers. We quickly came to the conclusion that no amound of rain would keep us from that.
We looked so ridiculous running throught the streets, but it was so fun. Loads of people were huddled in shops and under umbrellas, but we were running barefoot in our little dresses soaked to hte bone and laughing our arses off! we eventually made it to the bar, and they actually served us. by the end of the night we had a huge puddle of water surrounding our table and were getting filthy looks from a few customers! oh it's all been very exciting!
Yesterday mara and me took a bus up to Kailua beach, we'd heard that it was beautiful, and it was, I am pretty heavily sunburnt now and drank most of the seawater, but it was worth it. we made friends with loads of dogs and a floating coconut and had massive burgers to get me over the previous nights hangover! Mara has left for Alaska and I have a few more days left i Waikiki until I head to San Francisco! I've got 27 days left of this trip, and I'm making the most of it!
I've a few plans left for Hawaii, there is one more beach I need to visit and a good hike up to a crater, plus the second attempt at sailing!
