Beckie's Big Bling
Mark and Sarah arrived safe and sound into Christchurch on the Sunday evening .. if not very knackered! Quiet dinner in town to catch up on all the gossip from back home and allow mark the chance to have his first NZ beer! Start as you mean to go on as they say......
On Monday we took the cable car up overlooking Christchurch and although the weather was a little wet and windy the clouds did clear for us to get some great views over the city and the Banks Peninsula. Then we headed south down to Oamura. When we arrived at the hostel the owner mentioned we should go and see the penguins coming into shore at dusk. Therefore we headed down to the beach and saw 2 yellow eyed penguins (from quite far away so have to take their word for it had a yellow eye!) After this taster we decide to visit the Blue Penguins and saw about 50 and from a lot closer! Very cute and small running up the beach and disappearing to bed! Just before we called it a night thought would walk around the town but like walking on the set of 28 Days Later. It was Anzac Day and so maybe everyone had left for the holiday weekend!?!
The following day we had a quick drive down to Dunedin and were staying in an amazing B&B. After hostels i was just so happy to have a bed with a proper duvet! I walked around town while Squigs and Mark did a brewery tour... which of course ended in the pub to sample the local delights .... seafood!
We had a relaxing start before heading west to Te Anau. Drive was long but views stunning. We arrived early evening and headed down to the waterfront to do a glowworm tour. Cruised in a boat across the Lake and then took small boats deep into caverns to view the glowworms in the complete pitch black. Amazing and also very relaxing. Like looking up at the night sky as each glowworm looked like a star against the black backdrop of the cave wall.
The following day we drove to Milford Sound. One road in and one road out, pretty hairy mountain tunnel to drive through did make my heart go a bit!! So lucky with the weather, as was sunny and clear! Took a 3pm cruise around Milford Sound and enjoyed the views and saw some seals relaxing on the rocks in the sun! I just know my photos will not do the views justice and so somewhere everyone should visit!
Stayed the night in Milford and as only a population of less than a 100 people you can imagine the nightlife was a little quiet! The following morning was chucking down with rain and so could not believe how lucky we had been the day before! Took a watertaxi out to Milford Sound's Underwater Observatory and saw some Black Coral and I was even lucky enough to see a seal swimming by too! After a stop in Te Anau, drove to Queenstown and took the opportunity for a nightout at the many bars. Really lively town and very friendly people! Taking it a bit slowly today! ;-)
