Beckie's Big Bling
Arrived in Chile yesterday after quite an effort getting across the border. Mainly due to trying to locate the slip of paper Argentina give you to exit from ages ago and then Chile want some other piece of paper. Makes me keen to learn Spanish! Then travelled to the town of Pucon as hoping to climb Mount Villarrica. It is South America's only active volcano but can only climb in clear weather and so far has been raining for the last 2 days so not sure how long can stay here because Sarah G is flying out to Santiago for the 11th March. We have decided to stretch to the next 2 nights and then take it from there. The town is very quiet and sleepy. Went for a walk last night to the beach on the lake, bit chilly for swimming so tonight going to head to the thermal springs for some nice R&R.
9th March - Managed to get onto the volcano yesterday as the weather cleared but not for long enough for me to get to the top. After getting up at 5am and being all suited and booted in full mountaineering gear (even got my own ice axe!) we started the 4 hour climb up the mountain. But after 2 hours we got onto a ridge towards the summit but the weather closed in so fast the wind was making the snow freeze within seconds. Only experienced climbers were allowed to continue but they even came down later on due to the conditions! Still managed to get some amazing photos as up at about 2000m. On the way down got in a Bridget Jones moment of ever so elegently slipping down and taking out a few other people on the way! Just been relaxing today and then travelling to Santiago tomorrow.
