Beccy's Travel Journal
So BA was amazing, we both really loved it...and it was warm! shock horror! first day we caught a 3am boat from Colonia (did i mention in any of these entries about julie and i hiring a quad bike in colonia, well we did and the videos are hillarious!) to BA and were exhausted when we got there but had so little time in BA the nap had to wait. first day we visited the museum of latin american art and wandered round some of the lovely plazas to the north of the city centre, thats where the pictures of the huge metal flower are from, at dawn it opens its petals and then closes them again at night! then after a quick nap we went to have a tango lesson (julie was the man, we all knew didnt we) followed by dinner and the most incredible tango show. the dancers came throught the crowd to get to the stage and yes those are pictures of them singing to us and me dancing with a tango dancer during the show (not on the stage thank god!). after that we went to the famous opera bay night club, but were a bit dissapointed as it closed at only 3, we went on the wrong night. day 2 we got up really early and went down to florida street a popular shopping street but didnt find much other than leather, then ate in the 2nd oldest cafe in BA (ate in the oldest the next day) then went up the the evita museum, and after that visited her grave in Recoleta, a very creepy walled graveyard in the middle of BA full of extravagent tombs. and before the sun set we managed to squeeze in seeing the goverment buliding, casa rosada, too where evita made all her speaches from. it is pink and i liked it very much! for dinner that evenng we went to the very cool puerto madero area and then to an irish pub called kilkenny where i was proposed to by a doctor. day 3 we moved into the infamous milhouse hostel which was beautiful but also really good fun. we then visited the colourful la boca area where there are lots of street performers and gorgeous paintings being sold on the street, julie couldnt resist. then to the oldest cafe in BA for lunch, tortoni, and finally went to the palermo area for the cafes which are meant to be lovely but we got distracted by the shops which were really nice. budget went slightly out of the window here! had a very late nap in preparation for the milhouses organised trip to a club called sunset which happened to be hosting that night what appeared to be a underwear model contest, first the girls then boys, then transvestites! lucky us. day 4 we slept. we made it to san telmo, an area famous for its antique shops and cafes, for a few hours in the afternoon but it was cold and we'd missed most of the market. this is def a city i need to come back to for a proper shoppng trip at some time. mother, do u fancy it?
sunday morning we flew to santiago and it was warm again, until the sun went down and then we froze as this hostel has no heating! after all the bad press about santiago from other travellers we've met so far we were actually quite impressed. the city has amazing views of the snow capped andes on a clear day and some really nice green plaza areas with cafes to sit and read which is mostly what we did on monday to recover from BA. tues tho we got an early bus upto the mountains which only took an hour but nearly made me sick. the views were breathtaking and we weren't planning on doing any activites, but the snowboarding lessons sounded like a good deal so i couldnt resist. before i had it tho we met some professional snowboarders who were making films there (there website is www.funner.us , they are very good and amazing to see live!) and they offered to teach us for free. so we both got a free introduction from professionals then i left julie with them learning tricks for free and i got to learn boring stuff like how u stay on a button lift and how to get up when u fall down (a lot!)in my lesson which id already paid for, rubbish. but probably useful tho as there wont always be a professional snowboarder to pick us up!
today i went to see the statue of the virgin mary which is on a hill looking over the city (similar to christ in rio but not as big or famous), which would have been amazing if the weather had been clear and i could have seen across the city and to the andes, but its cloudy and cold again! typical.but tonight we fly to newzealand and loose all of thursday in the process, but fingers crossed friday will be warmer and sunny and people will finally speak english without sounding like Borat!
bye from chile, will talk to u all again when we are ahead of u and no longer behind! xxx
