G'day,
It was difficult to leave the Manderin Oriental in Singapore but Sydney isn't a bad place to leave it for I suppose. The flight was not the best, we had middle seats next to where the flight crew are based so for 9 hours we were squashed with people constantly brushing past us. Neither of us got any sleep and when we arrived in Sydney at 7.00am we were knackered. Plus we couldn't check into our hostel untill 2pm. So we knocked back a couple of coffees and tried to make the most of the time we had. I at this point was also nursing a cold which didn't help. The coffee worked for a few minutes but everytime we stopped to sit down at least one of us would drop of.
Sydney is a great city, we stayed in a lovely part called "the rocks" which is full of little cool shops and cafes and it also had a market on when we were there. Our legs were telling us to stop but you can't be in Sydney and not walk over the bridge! Fantastic piece of contruction, The walk to the top would have been awesome but far to expensive. Speaking of expense, after the cheapness of south east asia (even though we still went over budget) Sydney is crazy! London prices everywhere. The city did remind me abit of London, but with better weather and on the coast. You could just about see a bit of the opera house from our window but up close to it you realise just what a special building it is. we would have liked to have seen a show but nothing was on.
On our second and last day in Sydney (not enough!) we took a ferry to Manly beach. The ferry port was packed with people! Each ferry can take 1000 people and the last 4 had been full. Later we found out there were heavily discounted family tickets avalible. The ferry trip was a great way to see Sydney in itself, cracking views of the harbour. manly beach was stunning, I thought we had seen some nice beaches in Thailand but sand here was perfect, the sea though was a little cooler. After stuffing ourselves wiht fish and chips we went for a long walk in preperation for New Zealand. A pleasent coastal walk which now and then went into some bushes. This of course is spider territory and bex insisted I lead the way and shout "WEB!" whenever I could see one.
Having spent to much for the first day here we decided to cook beans on toast back at the hostel, as you can get beans here. first time we had them since we left for our trip and we loved them!!!
New Zealand is the next stop and we can't wait!
Chris
