Honduras
Cusuco National Park, Honduras
We all arrived in Honduras safe and sound (and my luggage did eventually, too!!) - we travelled by open top jeep up into the rainforest to base camp, and from there we went to a waterfall on Wednesday and then went further into the forest on Thursday where we were divided up into teams for jungle training. On Friday we set off for jungle training, which was really tough. We had to walk for about four hours through the jungle with our rucksacks to a tiny camp right in the middle of the jungle. There we had to set up hammocks and mosquito nets to sleep in, and had to start a fire to cook on. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to create a fire considering you're surrounded by trees! We had to chop down wood for the fire using a machete - amazingly I managed not to kill myself with it, in fact the only injury I sustained was a large blister on my thumb from the handle, which was quite impressive! It took ages to try and cook food (well, 'food' - the rations we were given were basically rice, spam and refried beans, from which I had to try and concoct a variety of meals to give us a fairly balanced diet), it took about an hour and a half just to cook rice! It was really difficult to get the flames just right, and the fire kept going out, which meant blowing on the embers to try and get it started again. Probably at least three hours a day was spent desperately blowing on embers trying to get some form of life into the fire whilst getting so much smoke and ash in my eyes (which was REALLY painful!) that my eyes are still stinging now!
On Saturday we learnt how to take bearings from a compass and measure distances in metres using paces, to construct a map of the local area. Then on Sunday we had to build natural shelters, and construct a trap. Our shelter was pretty bad - it didn't last the night, but never mind! On Sunday evening as a treat we had tortillas made with milk, with jam and honey, which was so nice after a diet of rice and refried beans! This morning, our Indonesian guide Didy taught us how to fry an egg on a leaf - Nicole's was awful, and just ran into the fire, but mine was actually ok, almost edible! The trek back down from the jungle training camp was much easier than the trek there, and it seemed hardly any time until we were back in base camp, where we are now. Not sure where we're going next week yet, I think we'll probably find out tomorrow. It was such a relief to get back to base camp after four days of not being able to shower (or even wash in any way!) or clean teeth etc! We were all stinking and disgusting, though after a lovely cold shower we're hopefully sweet smelling again now!
