today we travellewd from taupo to rottonrua as the locals call it as it smells of eggs (sulpher) we got to see some boiling mud pools before jumping off and exploring the lovely city that smellys yucky. we also went for a quick intro to maori food and history and beki won a necklace thanks to steve telling her the answer. as it was raining we just chilled before going to a cultural evening. we got to see maoris perform the welcoming ceremony to decide if we come in peace or war. luckily we came in peace and we passed into the main hall where we were entertained with traditional songs and dance. after this we went to have a hangi (i think) where all the food is burried in the ground to be cooked. it was so good and we piled our plates high as true backpackers should before then eating all the puddings. yumyum. a really nice evening which we paddled home in our wakka ( bus/canoe)
