Inca trail
Day 1
Up at 6am, with our guide Wilbert, set off to kilometer 82. Here it begins, on what they describe as the easy day!! Learnt this day that I don't share the same defiition of easy as the guides! Hiked up and down, saw inca ruins and got very hot and dusty!!!Also discovered the vast quantites you get fed! So all that extra eating I had done up till now in the hope I would lose weight on the trek...,bit of a mistake!
The porters carry all the stuff at a ridiculous speed and leave you feeling quite unfit and not in a position to moan at all! Arrived at camp in time for a nap and prep for the second day, even the guides say this day is hard!!!
Day 2
Woken with coca tea then met all the porters with a foot tap....a peruvian handshake apparently...I'm not so sure! They said this day is the hardest, they're not lying!!! 4hrs uphill, stairs, rocks, steepness, sun, altitude, painful! From 2980 meters to 4201 meters, a lot of climbing! Then all the way back down the other side! Finished early, recovery for the third and longest day.
Day 3
Depart 7.15 and reach camp at 16.00, long day of inca trails! But beautiful climb and hike along tops of mountains, with lunch up at 3600 meters in cloud! Amazing views, amazing ruins, almost makes you forget the pains of day two! Alot of inca learning and ridiculous constructions on the sides of mountains! So very nearly at the end, starting to ache like a 70yr old!
Day 4
Up at 3.40am....to the sound of rain! What more do you need to walk in the dark, rain! And a trusty headtorch (thanks Matt!). Set off through the gate at 5.30. Alot of crazy keen people, one even managed to fall off the side when we were all stationary, they were fine, just needed more brain cells! Arrived at the sun gate and saw Macchu Picchu, finally, albeit shrouded in a pesky cloud! But made it, intact, with the most painful legs in the world (think the running down the hills did not help!). Managed to walk aroung the site and when that all got too much, sunbathed on the terraces of Macchu Picchu! Inca trail done....definatly worth it!
