Retired & Traveling
After much debate, we decided we couldn't visit the Tuscany area and not go see the famous Michelangelo statue, David. Since it was our last day, we got the 7:15 train to Florence and found the museum. We got in line to buy tickets and had about a 45 minute wait--which wasn't too bad considering how long the lines get later in the day. The time passed by quickly due to the fact we were next to a young couple from Texas who has traveled all over the world. They were a lot of fun to chat with and we were inside the museum before we knew it. I have to say that as museums go, it was a bit of a letdown. Lots of 15th century paintings and the statue of David...a few unfinished pieces by Michelangelo...some plaster casts in another room, ancient musical instruments--that's about it. When we were finished touring, I looked at Rich and asked, "Are we done??" Apparently we had seen all there was to see. We made our way to a market and decided to get a slice of quiche, although it was made with mozzarella, ham, grilled red peppers--tasted nothing like any quiche I've ever had but was absolutely delicious! We both had had enough of the crowds (I truly can't imagine what that place is like in the summer at the height of tourist season), and headed for home. Our hosts have been so generous by giving us fresh produce, spaghetti sauce, olive oil, wine, eggs--it's a shame we will miss their garden really producing! Tomorrow is a travel day, heading for Romania!
