Retired & Traveling
I don't believe I've mentioned this yet but our apt is right above a Danish Bakery--so we have had fresh Danish pastries every morning courtesy of Mike. :)) This morning was oh my gosh, so yummy, we scarfed it down in a matter of moments. Some kind of cream filled in one side and apple on the other. I meant to take a picture but it was only crumbs left by the time I thought of it! LOL
Today's agenda included a private six hour bike tour of the city. I was told we would be picked up for our tour at our apt since it was private, meaning we didn't need to travel to the City Center meeting area. So we waited outside and along comes a gal on a bike who was there to "pick us up." Which basically meant we had to walk about a mile to get our bikes. This normally wouldn't be that big of a deal, but my RA has flared up and every step hurts. :((
We finally make it to the City Center and wouldn't you know, all the bikes had already been rented. So our guide says she knows where some more are, and off we go for about a 10 minute walk. None there either. She offers to do a walking tour instead, but we all quickly said no thanks. So she says she knows where yet another group of bikes are, but that she will go make sure there are some there so we don't have to walk any more than necessary. We park ourselves on a bench and wait for around 10 minutes and and she comes back with good news--she's reserved us some bikes and we are good to go! So we take off and walk about 5 minutes to get them.
We got a lesson in riding because come to find out, the bikes are electric meaning that once you start pedaling, a motor kicks in and helps you go faster. Oy Vay!! Not sure at first if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but we hop on and away we go.
Our tour guide, Ava, was very knowledgeable and took us all over the city. We saw all the major sights, stopping for lunch in Nyhavn right on a canal. Legend has it that the homes are so brightly colored because the sailors that used to live in Nyhavn thought they all looked alike and needed the colors to help them remember where they lived! I'm thinking alcohol may have also been involved in their confusion. :)) It was overcast all day, slightly chilly but overall, a great day for cycling. Pam and Mike climbed to the top of the Tower (see photo) and even though I wanted to, I knew my hips wouldn't make it. Rich and I waited and it was nice to take a break. We got to see the Little Mermaid, a lot of the major buildings and bridges and Ava made sure we could keep up. One really cool thing we got to see was the changing of the guard (see the photos). The soldiers look like they are about 15 years old, but she told us they are probably 18-22. It was nice that the crowds weren't so large like they are in London at Buckingham Palace.
She even took us to Christiana, which is difficult to explain but basically is a hippie style community that began back in 1971. We had to discard our bikes to tour this area and pretend she was our friend, because they don't like tour groups going through (according to Ava.) Mike said he could smell the pungent air, I didn't. :))
This bike tour was one of the most challenging things to do, as we were right in the midst of other cyclists and cars and both were very intimidating! However, we managed to keep up and everyone walked away without any injuries. I'd call that a successful adventure!
We ate dinner at a "take-away" place just down the street from the apartment that had the best Thai food...we actually ate in so we saw how busy they were. OMG...so many people came and went, it was amazing. But after tasting the food, I could understand why--it was delicious!
