Went to Albuquerque and drove through on 66. Saw the Red Ball Café, home of the original Wimpy Burger. Neighborhood was funky; didn't stop. Saw a big roadrunner. Had to double back to get the picture.
Outside of Albuquerque, we stopped at an Indian crafts store and got some fry bread, which Mom gobbled down. She also found a silver hair barrette.
Went through the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. Amazingly, the Painted Desert was open (it was closed for re-painting the last time we were here).
Drove into Holbrook and got to the Wigwam Motel. We’ve been looking forward to it for the whole trip. It was great. The rooms are built in the shape of a teepee, but once you’re inside, it seems just like a motel room (probably because it is a motel room), just circular. About four feet from the floor, the wall starts tapering inward. There’s a ceiling, so you can’t see up into the point of the teepee. There are two small windows, about two feet from the floor, with one housing the air conditioner. Molli enjoyed looking through the window and watching the world go by.
Found a nice place for dinner again: Joe and Aggie’s American and Mexican Food. It, too, is in the acknowledgements at the end of Cars. Lassiter and company spoke to them when he was researching for the movie. The restaurant was opened in the 40s and is now under the management of the third generation in the family. Stan and Alice (second generation) retired some time back from the restaurant, and their daughter (third generation) now runs the café. Their nine-year-old granddaughter (fourth generation) already expects to inherit the business and says, "When I own the restaurant, I’m going to fire all family members. Too much drama!"

Kim Orloff Looking GOOD in those Stetsons... you are finally beginning to meld into the surround! Have missed getting your posts; somehow I must have gotten dropped off the list. Was asking Jer if he'd gotten any, so he forwarded this to me... can go back and read the others now.Good luck on the porta-potty - we had that happen once... was just the flush vaccuum seal had boken; simple part to replace.Looking forward to the next post - sounds like has been a REAL vacation!
