Day 85, 86 & 87
San Sebastian was our last R&R spot before the three most hectic weeks of the trip. With Barcelona, Amsterdam and Oktoberfest on the horizon we could tell this would be the last place with any decent rest. As such this city was filled with a lot of beaching, a lot of eating, a lot of sleeping and not much else.
San Seb is well known throughout Spain for it's beaches. Especially for the fact that they have decent waves. On the first day we headed to the bayside beach which boasted slides and a diving board floating on the water. The next two days we found it difficult to drag ourselves away from the surf beach. With the incredible waves that have been unseen since Freshy was good, this place was heaven. Whilst on the beach we improved our already impressive tans, surfed in the monster waves and even went for a run. I wish those days never ended.
SS is also known for its fantastic restaurants, hailed by many as the gastronomical capital of the world. Upon hearing that the third best restaurant in the world was there, we researched vigorously, looking how to get there. However once we found out that it was 150€ a meal and you had to book months in advance we sadly had to can the idea. However that didn't stop us sampling the finest food we had eaten in a while. With a recommendation of a somewhat fancy place nearby, we headed out for lunch and bought ourselves a three course meal that was incredible. With sashimi, lamb and a French toasty kind of dish on the menu it was the best 26 euro I had spent in a while. We even got a surprise box at the end filled with nuts, marshmallows and muffins. Will show you all pictures very soon.
Whilst the formal celebrations of Gavs birthday happened in Valencia, his actual birthday was in SS. Az and I being such amazing friends, we couldnt let the occasion pass with no notice. So during the night before, whilst he was asleep, the two of us and anyone else we could recruit, decorated the room complete with balloons, streamers, hats, horns and a Spanish happy birthday sign (we assumed it said happy birthday). As we set up we thought he noticed us, as we popped balloons (accidentally) and wrapped him in streamers. But knowing Gav, he woke up the next morning very surprised and thankful he has such incredible friends. We were even rewarded for our hard work that evening as Taryn treated us to dinner at a fancy restaurant. Thank you Taryn we really enjoyed ourselves.
One touristy thing I did during our stay in SS was a walk at midnight to the end of the beach. Now whilst this might not sound impressive, this walk was about 5km and it was cold. I wouldn't normally choose to do something random like this but as we hadn't done much touring I felt I had to see something in San Seb. It was totally worth it, finding an awesome place at the end, which I later found to be called the wind comb. Here, in the pitch black, with noone else around it was awesome to chill, waves crashing next to me and an amazing view of the town lights.
That pretty much sums up San Seb as we didn't really do much. We had a good chill and were ready to move on. Next up Barca!
