Is Montevideo.....rien ne va plus.....wait, is that right? I think there´s a casino....anyhoo.
A new country....arrive on the overnight bus, cream crackered as usual, craving a proper bed....taxi drops us off at the Hotel Nuevo Ideal....nice place, with a big atrium, friendly staff, cable tv and a little balcony....through which all the noise from the street would filter.
After Sharan catches a few Z´s, head out to explore, find a nice place that serves chips with egg and meat heaped in a pile....lovely. Pass a fountain where lovers attach padlocks for luck....when i get home i plan to build the ´pound coin´fountain of luck. The nearby square is alive with a rally of some sort so give it a wide berth.
The next day we pound the pavement, see the port and nearby market, visit Garibaldi´s old gaffe, browse an old house converted in to a museum, pay our respects (nose around) Artigas´ mausoleum with it´s two live soldiers guarding it. They were dressed in traditional uniform, like that guy off the old quality street box....you know the one. Get offered Marijuana - think we stumbled momentarily down the wrong street there....or the right street? Browse the market in the old part of town, take in an art gallery by some bod who thinks geometry is art. Bar street is dead at this time so head back to the hotel. Eat that night at a ´posh´restaurant...get some lovely ribs off the parilla.
The next day, instead of heading back to Argentina, we chilled a bit. Quite tiring, this travelling lark...need to take it easy every now and again. Take a 4k stroll round trip to get bus tickets from the terminal....don´t do that kind of walk often at home!
Highlight of the day - a grilled meat platter with ribs, sausage, black pudding, chicken, kidneys, more sausage....so good!
Have another comfortable night at our hostel....conveniently located opposite the military museum....which we noticed as we were leaving.....headed to the bus station to catch our 930 bus to Rosario back to Argentina. Cross the border at midnight....didn´t have to get off the bus this time, and chugged through til 4am.
Montevideo, Uruguay....could have been Argentina.....differences were too subtle for us to really appreciate on such a short timescale. Would recommend a visit, though.
