After a mammoth 40 hour train journey from Madras (Chennai), followed by a bumpy, hair raising 3.5 hour jeep ride (17 people crammed into/on top of one jeep - cosy!) we made it to Darjeeling and have been here for 4 days now.
It feels fantastic to be in the cooler mountain air after a couple of weeks down in the tropics and the views of Kangchenzonga (3rd highest mountain in the world) are amazing. The place has a really nice laid back atmosphere, and the tea is, naturally, pretty good as well. Took a trip on the steam 'toy' train yesterday which was fun, and also visited the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which includes a really interesting museum on the history of attempts on Everest and some of the equipment used in the successful 1953 expedition.
Managed to drag ourselves out of bed at 4am this morning to go and see sunrise over the mountains from Tiger Hill - and wished we hadn't bothered as it was so cloudy you couldn't see a thing! (this didn't seem to bother the 300 or so other people up there who were still pushing and shoving to get to the front and taking pictures of grey)
Also, booked our flight to Nepal yesterday, we leave tomorrow and we're very very excited!
