We once again travelled inwards to visit the third of the Imperial Cities, Meknes. Encircled by rich plains abundant with agricultural products we could have bought any number of livestock from small stalls at the side of the road from chickens, turkey, pidgeon, rabbitt and duck.
A distance out of Meknes along the main roads we started to notice a lot of Police roadblocks and many different Army personnel resplendent in various uniforms. The closer we got to the city centre the more of them there were and by the time we got there peple were lining the streets behind barriers and there was definately a party atmosphere. We decided it must be that they were expecting a visit by a dignatory which in fact turned out to the the King. By the time we reached the city centre we could hardly move as many roads were blocked off and the Police were sending us here there and everywhere, not easy in a motor home and to make matters worse there were no signs for the campsite. Wehad a slight idea where the campsite was but because of the city walls, various one way systems and the road blocks we were having serious difficulty in finding it. In the end we had to get a taxi driver to lead the way whilst we followed him. Yet another run down campsite but this one was disgusting with no electricity because everything was broken and falling down. We had to plug in at the dilapidated closed down restaurant and only just managed to stay for one night whereas we had planned to stay for two. We had a quick tour of the Medina and ended up in a rug shop once again. We hadn't really wanted to go in but explained that we would although we had no intenton of buying anything. The owner gave us a description of all the rugs and how they are made and what they are used for and in fact it turned out to be really interesting. We managed to make our escape when he turned on his sales pitch and after he had managed to talk us out of a pen and a whistle for his children!!
We left the next day and headed back towards the coast and knew why they called Meknes the third Imperial City because in our opinion it was nowhere near as interesting or vibrant as either Fes or Marrakesh.
