Nik and Nat's Adventures
So after checking out of The Greenhouse Backpackers in Melbourne at 5.45am, I caught the shuttle bus to get me to the airport and said goodbye to Australia. Strange to think after being there so long that I was finally off to somewhere new. It was very exciting though, as during my time spent down in Victoria and South Australia it was quite cold, so it wasn't like I was going to miss the climate! I checked in at 7 am, but the moody lady behind the desk requested to weight my hand luggage...oh dear, it was 11kg's instead of 5-7kg! Osps. My backpack was on the limit (as always) at 20 kg's, but she let me put some of it in the hold anyhow. Don't know what I would have done otherwise, there really is nothing else I can get rid of now. I successfully avoided the Duty-Free shops, which was something of a challlenge but I did it, just 3 more airports to go!! The flight was dull but ok, other than eating two breakfast in the space of about 2 hours. As I flew over New Zealand into Christchurch, I had the most beautiful view of The Southern Alps and the West Coast. New Zealand had some sudden and unexpected snow, so everything was white...not much chance of spotting sheep!! When we had landed, I got pulled over by a security guy who I think was just being nosey, but turns out he just wanted to see where I was from as his wife moved from Christchurch Dorset, to Christchurch New Zealand. As I come through arrivals, Grace spotted me before I saw her, and she came bounding over. It is so lovely to see her again, forgot how much I missed her. She is still the same old Gracie that I left in March, happy and full of beans, but with an added tan from Thailand. Caught a bus in to the centre of Chrstchurch to Base Backpackers hostel, which was located right in the centre of town..very handy. We also got ungraded to a girls only floor, which has posh towels and smelly's so we were very happy! All day we both kept starting conversations and then kept drifting off onto something new, there was just so much to catch up on. Went for a nice meal in the evening after wrapping up for the cold, and yes it is colder here than in Australia, suprise suprise! Spent the next couple of days taking it easy and doing some sightseeing. Christchurch is so British, you would think you were in England. It even has an Avon RIver! Caught the Tram around town, which really didn't take long to do a circuit and went up The Christchurch Gondala to get some good sunset shots over the city and of the snow on the mountain tops. When we arrived back from The Art Gallery on Thursday, both Grace and I were pleased to find that Natalie had arrived safely after flying in from Tazmania. We all got a good nights sleep in our "posh dorm", ready to catch the Kiwi Experience bus at 7am the next day.
