An early start with some medical dramas. We planned an 8am departure towards Horseshoe Bay for the ferry to Langdale.
At 7.30 Chris and I decided there was time for a quick swim and the Kitsilano outdoor pool, but this all went wrong when I fell off my bike cutting my chin and breaking a tooth.
So..no swim, but after patching up with Chris and Laura's first aid kit we set off for the local pharmacy and onward to Horseshoe Bay, and we made it to the ferry in Millie just in time to board. Once in Langdale we drove north to Roberts Creek, where Bill applied further first aid and steristrips to my chin and we then resumed our holiday with coffee and Egg Bennies in the Gumboot Cafe!
We drove on along the coast through Sechelt, Half Moon Bay, Secret Cove and Madeira Park. We stopped at the Iris Griffiths Wetland centre. There was no one about so we wandered around and sat in the sunshine by the lake, watching the birds and insects.
At Earls Cove we took our second ferry to continue travelling north. This was en extremely spectacular cruise through fijord-like scenery and we stood on deck in the sunshine, wind in our hair, amazed at its beauty for the entire journey. The further north we went, the more remote and dramatic the scenery became. the drive was equally spectacular with dense forest on our right and the sea on our left for most of the way. one of the highlights was when a black bear appeared out from between the trees and galloped across the road in front of us!
Our final destination was the Desolation Sound Wilderness Resort at Okeover Inlet, near Lund - the northernmost acccessible point on the Sunshine Coast.
We were greeted on arrival by a lovely french girl, who had come here for a kayaking holiday, and stayed! Nothing was any trouble and she enthusiastically shared maps of the local area and its highlights. We drove steeply down hill towards the sea, to our log cabin (cabin number 1) which was every bit as good as we had hoped.
On the water's edge, it was in a private setting with our own hot tub on the deck and beautiful views out through the forest and over the sound. We hopped into the hot tub with a couple of cold beers and there was a definite sense of Ahhhhh.... after along day of driving.
Not for long though as we had supper booked at 7pm at The Laughing Oyster - an absolute gem of a restaurant a few hundred metres along the road from us.
Even though the views for our cabin were great, the views from our table outdoors on the deck at the Laughing Oyster were spectacular and we happily sat and watched the sunset with our drinks and menus.
The only starter we could really dream of ordering here was oysters - and we bravely ordered Sauteed oysters with garlic butter, lemon and Asiago cheese. I had Seafood bisque and followed that with a warm seafood salad and Bill enjoyed a wild salmon filet. Quite simply the very best seafood restaurant ever. Not just great food but great humour and hospitality from Dave and his team.
Very contented we wended our way home to unpack and stargaze from our hot tub with a glass of wine.
