A short day today, to rest my lungs and stay in a town with a link to my family.
Breathing difficult again, but less so. I was about to leave the Dillon hotel via the tradesman entrance when I noticed the little mowing machine the hotel were employing. I'd seen a few of these on my travels thus far but all had run away before I could get a photo. So this fella just carried on munching oblivious of me.
The ride to Three Bridges was uneventful. Three Bridges itself has a cyclists only campground setup and ran by a local chap. It's free to stay, though donations are welcome. Too soon in the day for even me to consider staying.
After lunch in Three Bridges, I dawdled along to Sheridan. On the way passing the pictured limestone outcrop. Wikipedia it, suffice to say it was an important landmark for Native American tribes who thought it resembled a Beaver's head. Early pioneer white folk also used it for the same reason.
I rolled into Sheridan mid-afternoon and went straight to the motel. A lovely place with a lovely owner. My only concern being that everyone there seemed to have at least one dog. However, save for the owner's Jack Russell biting a friendly Golden Retriever's nose, there was no problem.
I had noticed a couple of maintenance tasks needed doing to my bike so spent some time doing these. I hadn't oiled the chain since leaving Portland, and it was beginning to sound like my knees. Also, disappointingly, my back tyre's tread had worn flat in only 1300 miles. So I changed it for the front tyre, and put on the spare I'd been carrying.
On my Dad's side of the family there are Sheridans, hence the family connection. So in theory I could be related to General Philip Sheridan, from whom the town takes its name. Although he did many bad things in the war against the Confederates and the final Indian wars - in my view - he was deeply involved in the formation and development of Yellowstone National Park. So not all bad then.
Of course, if I were American I would already know if, and how we are related. Oh, and how much he made. Shame on me.
Tomorrow another shorter day but with a hard climb in the middle.
Edging closer to Yellowstone, isn't it exciting.
