"Izzy flute"
The iPad chirruped and up bobbed the reminder for my regular babysitting slot. Me, Max and Charlotte hanging out while Izzy has her flute lesson.
The first pangs of homesickness.
I quickly deleted it and all alerts still there for the remainder of the year. Whenever we're overseas I'm usually so focussed on the present I tend not to get homesick. Just the odd little thing sneaks up on me.
I'm currently in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, China, with my husband Owen - where he'll be teaching English to undergraduate students from all over the country. We're doing the AVI thing again - Australian Volunteers International. We did it once before; we went to East Timor for 18 months. Then we both worked at the Dili Institute of Technology; this time I'm an AAD, Approved Accompanying Dependent. Being a librarian I didn't feel comfortable taking a class so instead I'm hoping to find something useful to do informally. We've been here just over a month and so far I'm being a housewife. It's quite enjoyable (and definitely less stressful than teaching) but I'd like something else to do as well. So far I've volunteered to proof-read practice English essays for a couple of students and helped with a bit of research for lesson preparation. Perhaps I'll be able to do something in the library.
Now I've decided to have a go at blogging. I haven't done it before, but I've read some really interesting ones. Not sure if I'll be able to make it interesting. At least it will be a good way to jot down regular random thoughts and experiences without bombarding friends and family with incessant emails. I'll give it a try.
