No one in Chile can pronounce my name properly. People in the US have trouble with it too.
In the USA the situation goes something like this:
"What's your name?"
"Austyn"
"What? Austin?"
"Yup, that's me"
Then a few minutes while they try to decide if they believe that a girl is named Austyn and/or think of some clever joke about Texas.
In Chile, it's slightly different…
"Como te llamas?"
"Austyn"
"¿¿¿Qué???" Completely perplexed by the combination of sounds that is my name.
"Aauussttyynn" I say slowly.
"¿OOsteeen?"
"Austyn"
"Osteen"
"Sí".
So, everyone here calls me Osteen, or some variation of it. I've even started calling myself that on occasion, maybe I'll keep it up even when I get home.
This week has been very busy. On Monday I went with some friends to an art studio where they have bilingual classes. The walls and streets surrounding it are covered in paintings and mosaics, because the students can put their work outside and leave their mark on Valparaiso that way (the picture for this entry is some mosaics across the street). I started making a mosaic mirror, but I didn't get very far…you know how my OCD kicks in when I'm doing artsy things. I haven't had time to go back because I had a quiz in my folkloric dance class (The written one; the part where I have to wear a costume and dance like a fool is next week), and in my finance class. I'm hoping my teachers will cut me some slack for being a poor, helpless gringa.
