Hong Kong Day 6
After a leisurely start to the day we decided to visit Kowloon again rather than Lantau Island as the weather was much colder today, 15C and very cloudy. We headed straight for Mongkok on the MTR which is considered to be among the most densely populated areas on the planet, a mass of neon signs and crowds of locals and tourists. Mongkok is notoriously known as the heartland of triad gangs but they say tourists are unlikely to be a target and we saw nothing extraordinary. It was a very vibrant area and great fun to visit. We walked along the Ladies Market, which apparently sells items specifically for females, but really was just full of tourist items plus lots of clothes. The bartering and bargaining was an enjoyable experience.
We walked back towards the ferry wharf through a host of small streets and local markets with lots of atmosphere and more fun than the high end shops of Nathan Road.
We were told that there is nothing more quintessentially iconic of Hong Kong than experiencing afternoon tea in the Peninsula Hotel so we decided to try it. In true colonial style tea is accompanied by a string quartet playing live and was worth waiting for after we queued for a while. There are no reservations so you have to wait until a table becomes available. The service was impeccable, the table laid out beautifully with napkins, bone china crockery, silver tea pots and a three-tier tray with dainty cakes, superb finger sandwiches and savouries, and scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve on the bottom tier. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in such a luxurious setting with good service and excellent food. After such a sumptuous meal we decided it was time to take the star ferry and tram back to the hotel to relax.
