We spent 2 nights at the beautifully restored Hacienda Guachala, about 15 mins away from Cayambe city. It is one of the oldest haciendas in the country - with high ceilings, a lot of outdoor living area, fireplaces in pretty much every room.
We took a trip up to the Cayambe volcano, the only snow-capped volcano on the equator. The views en route, of the cultivated mountains and valleys were beautiful, with the occasional glimpses of the Cayambe volcano as the clouds lifted for a few moments before descending again - and the friendly villagers nodding their 'hellos' as we drove past.
I was determined to have one last horse ride before my trip ended, and so we went out as soon as the rain stopped that afternoon .... only for it to pour again some 10 mins into our ride. Angelica completely lost her sense of humour as our horses were the most unresponsive we have ever had .... and she quit the ride after 20 mins and took a walk back to the hacienda, whilst the rest of us finished our hour's worth of riding. Not the most enjoyable ride I have had........
