The views were stunning as the bus took us out of Bariloche, skirting around Lago Nahuel Huapi taking us round to the other side of the lake, so we looked back on the town nestled in the valley between the snow-capped mountains and the lake. The lake and mountain views gradually became snow and pine trees as we passed through Argentinian Immigration and crossed the Andes over to Chile. On this side, the snow disappeared quite quickly as we descended to the Chilean Immigration office, and the vegetation was lush and green - evidence of much heavier rains in the Chilean Lake District.
Puerto Varas is a pretty village on Lago Llanquihue with gorgeous views of the 2 volcanoes (Osorno with its perfect cone gives me the impression of Mt Fuji transplanted to a lakefront in Chile, and Calbuco which is a little more uneven and more tapered). The village has kept intact much of its German history in its architecture, cuisine, and German pubs.
We were lucky with the weather on the afternoon that we arrived, as it rains approx 250 days a year in this part of the country - it was a beautiful sunny spring day when we arrived, and the bright yellow gorse bushes giving the countryside a cheerful splash of colour.
