Luang Prabang is beautiful. We have been staying in a lovely wood panelled cabin that looks like a ship. We are upstairs as well so we have large wooden chairs outside our room on a communal balcony where we can sit out in the day or night. There is also free water and green tea. The tea keeps Ben happy.
Our journey here wasn't the most fun. It took around over 8 hours and there had been a few landslides on the roads that wind round the edge of the mountains. There were big boulders that took up some of the road that we had to drive around and at one point we had a 15 minute stop whilst 2 diggers cleared the earth blocking the road. It was a bit scary at times!
For our first few days here, we didn't do much apart from watch Wimbledon (boooooooo at Sharapova and Murray being rubbish!), watch a couple of films in our room, spend a fortune in the amazing large night market and discover the cheap food and drink. It is all street food but so far we haven't been ill! You can get fresh fruit shakes that they blend with coconut milk for 38p. They are delicious. And for lunches we have been having big baguettes with chicken salad and sweet chilli sauce for 77p each. And in the evening there are lots of food stalls and communal tables to sit down. It is 77p for a plate that you can fill with lots of noodles, rice, spring rolls, fried vegetables and then you can choose some meat for 77p too if you like. So far we have tried big chicken skewers, a big local sausage and some amazing pork ribs.
One evening we climbed a big hill to see the beautiful city below us and watched the sunset. It was nice.
Yesterday we did a trip to a big waterfall that has a 60m drop. It was even bigger because it is rainy season so unfortunately there was no swimming around and you couldn't trek up to the top because the bridge leading up there had been washed away by the powerful river! Some people were literally scrambling up part of the waterfall quite high so I had to keep hold of Ben to persuade him not to do it! There was also a bear sanctuary at the waterfall with sun bears that had been rescued from various cruel activities nearby. It was nice to see some bears chilling out in hammocks!
It rained on and off for our first few days here but now this is our third day without rain and it is absolutely scorching. I'm finally getting a bit of colour back!
We plan to do a boat trip tomorrow and then head north on Thursday, hopefully via a 7 hour slow boat but that depends on if there are enough people. I hope there are because it sounds like a relaxing way to travel and would keep us away from any landslides!
