Hilo, Hawaii
Day 1 Hawaii, We left Halls Gap at 11.30 and set off for our drive to Avalon. We stopped at least five times because Angus kept needing to go to the toilet! Dad and I listened to JJJ the whole way and in no time at all we were at the airport. The plane flight to Sydney went for about an hour and a half. My favorite part of the flight was the take off. When we were in the airport we had about 4 hours of time to kill so we walked around and looked in all the shops looking for a burger king. We eventually had McDonalds (much to dad's frustration) and then met up with the extended family. We made our way over to the plane terminal and got on the plane. I got stuck sitting next to a sick old man who kept coughing and coughing. I only slept for less than 4 of the 10 hours and the flight took forever! We finally made it to Honolulu we then had to go through customs and Mum and Dad had to get their fingers printed and their eyes scanned. Afterwards we sadly said goodbye to our family (we will see them again on Maui. We then got on a flight to Big Island. We got into our hire car and drove to the Lai Nani resort. There is a reasonably large pool and a great view of the ocean. The guy who owns it is American and very nice. He knows all of the other people in tourism so he is going to get us great deals wherever we go. Then we had a swim in the pool and had a early sleep because we were very tired. Today we got up at 9 o'clock left and went to Hilo for the Merrie Monarch parade. We tried out a thing called shave ice. They make it by putting a big block of ice on a turning machine that pushes the ice towards a grater that grates the ice which goes into a cup and they then pour different types of tropical flavored syrups in it. Today I got grape, watermelon and bubblegum. I got a small for $2 and it was huge! Then we watched the parade and got lunch at Aloha Luigi's. They had a map of the world in the restaurant they give every tourist who goes in there a pin to put where they come from on the map. We then explored Hilo and went to a shopping center where I tried a corn dog. It was a hot dig dipped in batter and then deep fried. It tasted very strange. I bought it for $2.50. I also bought two white t-shirts, one had a volcano on it and in writing Hilo the other one had hang loose on it. They were both $3. Afterwards we came back to the resort, had a swim, tried out the hot tub and then went to bed.
