And we're off...
Brisbane Airport, Queensland
The clock was ticking, there was less than 20 hours from stepping off the red-eye from Perth to Brisbane before I needed to get back to the airport.
Thanks to Kirsten for dropping me off at stupid-o'clock, I was ready for my 5am departure to London.
This trip was off to a good start with a couple of firsts for me. I'd never flown on a 777 or A380. Tick and tick. These two flights made the Brisbane-Perth flights seem like a sprint.
Not being very organised, I landed in London about 12 hours before the rest of the guys, without any accommodation booked. I justified this by thinking" sometimes it's just good to wing-it". As it turns out, not many hotels close to the airport are available after 8 or 9 pm.
It must have been the lure of what should have been my first full night's sleep in a bed in the last three nights that made me hit" confim booking" for the Essex Inn. I finally checked in at 11:30. I'm sure the online booking said it was 3.5miles from Heathrow?
My last two stops were the Emirates business lounges in Brisbane then Dubai (one of the benefits of FIFO work), both of which were dripping with opulence. Now it was time for me to experience the forces of Yin-Yang in the universe, inside the Essex Inn.
The room probably should have been charged out by the hour and I'm not sure how much cleaner I felt after a shower. I think the thread bare carpet had been cleaned this year and the room had a special "lived in" aroma which made it all the more inviting. Probably won't put this place on the recommended list. It's a good thing that Peter has taken care of the bookings for the rest of the trip.
