Our SE Asia Tour 2013
We left Kalimpong early as there was a possibility of road closures along the way. The drive was long, bumpy and busy with lots of trucks, buses and cars, this being the main road into Sikkim. Our driver was good and brought us through safely.
I was expecting a more complicated border crossing, but our driver and car was able to cross the causeway into Kakarbhitta on the Nepal side. Both the Indian and Nepal immigration formatlities were OK with big forms to fill in, but uncomplicated. Our driver was able to negotiate a taxi for us for the drive to Bhadrapur airport. I had already ascertained what the local price for the journey was, so was able to negotiate and get this price.
Off we trundled in quite a dilapidated vehicle (after the luxury of the Indian cars) first along the main highway to Kathmandu, then we turned off onto a minor bumpy road to Bhadrapur. The drive was quite pleasant as there were very few cars and we were able to enjoy the countryside villages.
As we had not encountered any delays en route we got to Bhadrapur airport very early so had to sit around waiting. Fortunately, there was free wifi there and we were also able to amuse ourselves by watching the passing parade of people arriving and departing.
The flight was slightly delayed but we finally took off. Despite getting seats on the correct side of the plane for views of Everest and other high peaks, we were disappointed as it was cloudy all the way.
We were met at Kathmandu airport by the WE representative and dispatched in another dilapidated taxi to the Radisson. Made contact with Mandy (another friend) who was joining us on our Bhutan tour.
Dined at the Rum Doodle restaurant that night on steak, which made a welcome change from curries.
