Our SE Asia Tour 2013
Had a tour of Darjeeling's sights today - there weren't many. Did enjoy the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (created by Tenzing Norgay) and Zoo which has a good collection of animals found in the Himalayan region. Saw red panda, panther, snow leopard, common leopard, black himalayan bear, himalayan wolf, yaks, various himalayan goats & deer and also caught a glimpse of the Bengal tiger, who was playing coy and hiding just inside his cave.
Declined going for a ride on the cable car but watched the students from the Mountaineering Institute practising their abseiling technique at Tenzing Rock. Brief visit to the Tibetan Refugees Self Help Centre which was haphazard and badly run.
Back at Chowrasta (the Mall) we had a lecture on Darjeeling teas from the man at Nathmulls (tea merchant) and then sampled the variety we had chosen at their cafe. Muffins and tea at Glenary's Bakery (seems a bit tired looking now since my school days) - more flies. Ran the gauntlet of the street tourist stalls selling really trashy clothes and souvenirs on our walk back to the hotel.
Had a surprise phone call from Clive and John who are at Kagbeni with only a short walk to go tomorrow to Jomson. The whole group are completely knackered having had some really long days with 25 km/day for the last 3 days. They will be glad of the rest days in Pokhara.
