We've arrived! After a long, long, loooooooooooong trip down, we finally got to Cape Town. Our first stop was supposed to be Table Mountain but because of the weather, we decided to reschedule that to tomorrow. Instead, we went to District 6.
District 6 is an area in Cape Town that was greatly affected by Apartheid. Prior to Apartheid, it was an incredibly diverse community. People from all nationalities and religions lived together in peace. In 1966, the South African government declared District 6 to be a "whites only" area. Because of this new law, anybody who was not white was relocated to a different area. Often families were torn apart and were forced to live in different townships. Over 70,000 people were forced out of their homes in an eleven year time span. To add insult to injury, their houses were torn down because they were considered "unclean".
Though these laws have been removed in more recent years, the pain from the destruction they caused is still incredibly fresh. We visited the District 6 Museum and were able to speak with Noor Ebrahim, a former District 6 resident. Noor is a 70 year old man who was one of the founders of the D6 Museum. Because of his Indian heritage, he was labeled as "colored" by the South African government and forced to relocate his family. He told us about his life growing up and the frustration about being a young adult with a family during the Apartheid era. Amazing, followed by saying that he did not hold any hatred in his heart for the people who oppressed him. Instead, he told us that it was important to remember the past as a way of creating a better future.
