We've only been away for two days but we've already seen so much! After a boring day yesterday that basically consisted of waiting and flying, we've been out and about today seeing a few of Bangkok's sites. The drive from the airport, our first introduction to the country, was crazy - people don't seem to take any notice of lanes at all and we saw hardly any traffic lights or indicating. Everyone drives on both sides of the road too - if there's a car coming, they just scoot back into a gap. Noone gets angry though, I guess because they're so used to it! Our hotel room is tiny but fairly standard - we get a shower and a western style toilet which is a relief. We're (sort of) getting used to the heat, but the smell is taking a bit longer to get used to. All of the footpaths are crowded with stalls selling food, clothes, CDs, 'designer' sunglasses (Evan picked up a nice pair of 'Okey's for only $2!) and even guns and knives (which I hope were fake). We got a ride in a tuk tuk which a really nice man who did the typical scam thing and took us to his friend's custom-tailored suit shop, where we browsed but didn't buy anything (they get commissions for taking tourists to shops on the way to where they've actually asked to go). We saw some beautiful temples, although the main temple was really crowded as it was a Buddhist holiday or the King's birthday or something like that. The other annoying thing are the people on the streets who tell you to go over to their shop/attraction/food stall. There was one man standing outside the temple who yelled at Evan, telling him he needed long pants to get into the temple in a ploy to get him to buy some from his shop (we weren't going into the temple anyway). The heat is pretty oppressive here, I've heard that the humidity sits around 85-90% at this time of year, so I think we'll be off to have a wee nap with the air-conditioning on full before dinner-time.... but the internet is really cheap here so no doubt we'll update you soon!
