Sat 30th- wandered round darwin, towards the beach with Ido and Christian, after lunch the usual routine kicked in off sunbathing, swimming and reading, before we headed out for drinks later in the eve.
Sun 1st- the first stop of the day was the Mary River billabong- a massive body of water where we went on a croc cruise. the weather was perfect to see the, and over the 90 mins we saw loads of them, plus birds and other critters! there is nothing better than seeing animals in the natural habitat, granted they are totally used to us being there but it was still fun! After lunch we went to Bowali visitor centre to gain some info about the local tribes and their history, and then it was onto Nourlangie to see the infamous rock art i;ve been hearing so much about! they were pretty impresive esp the fact they've been there for so long- we got a few little stories too from the guide about the origins of the stories and the dreamtime period. sunset at the yellow river gave some pretty cool pics and then it was fire time!
mon 2nd- a silly start but that was the make sure we got to JimJim falls before the crowds and kids got there. it worked and by 9 we were swimming alone in the falls, but by 10 the crowds started coming thru'and the tranquility was ruined. why do kids get everywhere??!! the walk to get there was hard above rocks and boulders but made us appreciate the place more when we got there. Onto Ubirr for a few more diff rock art places and the long journey home was started. went for a meal and drinks with the group, we won the pub quiz and got free beer :-)
tues 3rd- today was Litchfield national park, meant to be nicer than kakadu and closer so i was expecting a fun day. the morning to be honest was crap, it took us ages to get there, then ppl went on a croc tour so i went to the 'Window of the Wetlands'instead- nowt special cos it was all dry! saw some termite mounds and then had lunch at some lil place in the park. the fun started after lunch when we headed to the waterfalls- Florence Falls and Wangi Falls were ok, but it was busy with loads of tourists and just seemed too commercial, i know its hypocritical as i was on a commercial trip but u always wanna be the only ones there. went home to the hostel sorted my bag out, and then went for some food with the boys and to see transformers- really really fun!
weds 4th-onto the ATA bus down to Alice springs, the trip is gonna take 3 days and the we went to Katherine Gorge in the morn. a nice walk to a lookout and then i managed to blag my way to a free 2hr canoe trip down the gorge, simialr to the one at lawn hill but neither way its exercise! we spent the maj of the day there and then went to the camp site for food, fire and beers! oh and we had a little play on a didge...need more practice to say the least!
thurs 5th- we hada a long day of travelling today but we had a swim in the thermal pools of Materanka and then the crazy river next to it where they was a mix of hot, warm and cold water. we were trechnically swimmin with crocs but i didnt see any. oh and we managed to piss off an old guy in the pool by bombing into it- much to the delight of the kids who were doin it prior to us! Daly Waters was the stop for lunch and another quick swim+beer before we went towards Tennants Creek (f*** all there!) fire, food and beer again tonight and we slept in swags tonite too. these lil badboys are like a giant sleeping bad made of canvas which ur sleeping bag fits inside, pretty fun!
fri 6th- the devils marbles was the agenda today. giant pieces of rock just scattered about on the plain...acc to local stories they are the eggs of the river serpant, but to us whitemen they are the remnants of eroded away rocks from a few million years ago. the actual site of them is breathtaking, but the best part is the climbing and pissing around on them...a few good group pics around the rocks too. Ti tree is where i bought my didge (which should be home before i get there, so lewis no playing!) and then to Barrow Creek where the biggest aboringinal massacre occured, over 2000 killed by the local sheriff/pc/person, and is very close to the Peter Falconio murder- happy place. arrived in alice, did some much needed laudry and headed out for food and drinking. the night was awesome, there was games, nakedness, tree climbing, trolleys, random ppl and their pink hats and loads of photos which will make '"interesting"viewing when i see them!
