G'day guys, we are on day 4 of our trip, lying on the grass beside Lake Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
We have jam packed heaps into our first few days. The highlight so far was the trip up to Petronas Twin Towers which stops on level 41 for the skybridge and level 86 for the observation deck. We took the last tour of the day at 6.15pm hoping to see a sunset but unfortunately it was too light still. We had a nice cloudy view of KL & the highlands from 400m up which was pretty bloody impressive.
We have all but mastered the monorail, using it to get around town to see Chinatown & the wet markets at Chow Kit. These markets are incredible! Imagine 200 stalls crammed into a single street with tarps overhead and dirty water all over the concrete floor. Vendors are filleting fish and blow torching leather right next to each other. It stinks of seafood, spices and blood all mixed in together, not recommended for vegetarians.
Yesterday we braved the metrobus which took us on a 45min ride to Batu Caves, a worship site for Hindus. We were hassled by monkeys hunting for food, only James was stupid enough to get close to see one bare it's teeth! Ash got her hand henna'd, which is more indian than malay but it looks pretty cool. 272 steps up into the caves + high temps and humidity meant we both sweated like pedophiles at a Wiggles concert!
Our most expensive meal was 68RM ($21AUD), which included 4 tiger beers and 4 dishes. Most nights we have been to Jalan Alor which is a street full of vendors each specialising in a particular dish. You sit down at a table & are handed 10+ menus & you have to pay them all separately as your food comes out. Last night we had a whole grilled fish, called a "chicken fish" it was so good, definitely the best thing we have eaten so far. The little kitten which came to finish our scraps thought so too!
We have made a resolution to only eat local food when in each country to make the most of the experience. So no late night maccas runs, but we are looking forward to the late night Egyptian kebab!
Tomorrow is our last day in KL and then to jump on a 10pm flight to our next adventure- EGYPT!
Much love,
Ash & James
