We were treated to even more spectacular beaches of Perth on our drive upto Hilarys Marina on Sunday afternoon. City beach, Trigg beach amongst others but most pertinent was Scarborough beach! Ash was very excited to see the place and it did not disappoint. This place really does know how to do beaches! After a stroll around the shops David and Jo treat us to good old fish and chips, an ideal Sunday evening activity. That dreaded Sunday night feeling that many of us experience certainly felt a million miles away as we sat within the marina eating our fish and chips and catching up. We were starting to really like this place.
On Monday we were lucky enough for Jo and David to drive us to Penguin Island off Rockingham`s coast, 45 minutes south of Perth. This is the home of Western Australia`s largest colony of little penguins. The wind was blowing again and so we had a breezy boat ride over to the island just in time for us to have a wander around before the 12:30pm penguin feed. This was a great experience as a ranger from the island gave us lots of information about the little penguins (the smallest penguins in the world; very cute!) and we enjoyed watching those that had to be kept in captivity feeding and swimming in the tank. Before we watched the feeding at the discovery centre we were all excited to see a few wild little penguins hiding under some steps. We were informed by one of the volunteers that they were malting. During this period they shed their feathers and so arent waterproof hence why they stay on the island for a few weeks. These were little fat ones as they have to store up lots of body fat to survive this period.
After a less breezy trip back to the shore we went onto Mandurah, apparently the place were all the pommes head when they come to live in Western Austrailia. We could certainly see why as the area had its own harbour, small beach and a wonderful decked area with shops and cafes. David and I enjoyed a coffee whislt we all waited for his brothers arrival. It was great to meet Bob, Davids brother and we enjoyed chatting with him before heading back to Perth. David and Jo went to their grandchilds party in the south of Perth and so Ash and I enjoyed the view over the city before catching the ferry back to central Perth. We enjoyed a pizza for tea before enjoying a good nights sleep. This bed is like heaven in comparision to the hard mattresses of Asia!
