It was Christmas Eve when we landed in Melbourne and the only christmassy thing we had were our santa hats that had been given to us on our Uluru tour. Christmas in Australia certainly didnt feel like Christmas in England. With the sun shining we checked into our dorm (which was very messy to say the least - Happy Christmas to us) and headed out to the shops to get some food. Although it didnt feel like Christmas the shops were certainly operating on Christmas times and so with Aldi closed we decided to treat ourselves to a burger before heading back to the hostel. It was Christmas Eve after all. Habitat HQ our hostel was massive and so meeting people to celebrate with was going to be a hard job as there just seemed to be too many people. However, after some good chat in our messay dorm and after meeting some guys in the common area we got talked into hitting the town late on in the evening when we had originally planned to do washing. Although it didnt feel like Christmas it still felt wrong to be doing our washing on Christmas Eve!
Out we headed to 'The Espy', a local place were they had live gigs throughout the evening. After paying 17AUD for a round (1 beer and a rum and coke) we decided it wasnt going to be a big one and after wishing many a Happy Christmas on our way home, we got to bed around 2am.
Saturday was Christmas Day!! It still didnt feel like Christmas apart from a few festive cards that we`d carried with us that lay upon our bunks amidst the mess of our room they didnt quite fit. All was to change however when Guy and Petah picked us up from the hostel around 1pm. On arriving and Margaret and Tonys place (Petahs parents) we already felt more christmassy with the table decked out with decorations and the tree adorned with twinkling lights. We were treated to a wonderful seafood starter and then turkey and pork dinner which was just what we needed to make Christmas Day of 2010 seem like it actually happened. All was topped off with a plum pudding and a MASSIVE pavalova that tasted immense. We had a lovely afternoon laughing and chatting and Petah and Guy even treated us to a chocolate filled stocking. Chatting to our familys in England on skype was also emotional but great and made us feel even more christmassy. Christmas is Australia can happen!
That night we got an early night ready for the big event that lay ahead the following day - England v Australia Ashes Test at the MCG!! Bring it on!
