After the amazing day at the salt flats the day before, we were all wondering if the next few days would be just as good. We had an early start around 7am and bundled into the jeep and set off on our way by 8.30am. We spent the day driving further and further into the Bolivian desert, we certainly saw some amazing sights. Stefan put his ipod on and treated us to some Swiss rock music whilst we took in the scenery and stopped to take pics. There were numerous dormant volcanoes that surrounded us, all topped with beautiful white snow whilst some even smoked a little. The ride was more than bumpy at times as no road existed but it made the trip that bit more advetorous and exciting. Our seat belts were definately worn at all times!!
After a feast of a lunch on the side of the road we headed to the red lagoon to see some flamingos. Unfortunately they did fly off as soon as we tried to get close to get a picture but seeing thousands on the lake was good enough. We arrived at our sleeping place around 6pm and enjoyed a hot drink before doing some of the puzzler! The puzzler had become a good source of entertainment on the trip and our whole dorm got involved in completing it. Sofira from Holland was even better at some of the clues than us! What else are we supposed to do in the middle of nowhere at 5000m high?! We knew the last day would be an early start so after collecting our hot water bottle we climbed into bed around 9pm and lights were out.
The 4am start was not welcomed the next day, particuarly when Stefan set his alarm wrong and we all ended up waking up half an hour too early! It was absolutely freezing outside and so with as many layers on as possible we climbed into the jeep hoping and praying the heating would work. Although Oscar tried his best, we remained freezing in the back. 20 minutes later we had arrived at the volcano called Sol De Manana where we climbed in the crater!! This was absolutely crazy as we were wandering around pools of boiling mud with steam everywhere but exciting all the same to actually be in a crater. We definately warmed up a bit here!!
Before breakfast we hit the hot springs then started the 8 hour drive back to Uyuni. After dropping Stefan off in Chile we headed back and the four of us enjoyed chatting and laughing the time away. A great 3 days topped off with a pizza at minuteman. Good times!!!
