This past weekend my friend Vinnie and I went down to Sicily to visit Sue and Joe McArdle. It was a great trip, their house is very nice, and we all got along great. Joe is working in the Public Works Office at the Navy Base in Sicily, and Sue is just on vacation as she says.
Friday night after we arrived, we headed to the house of a friend of Sue and Joe. She had just returned from Spain and was cooking a Spanish meal for everyone. There were 12 of us total, we got to know some of the people Joe worked with which was cool. The people on the base seem to be a tight knit group and they are always talking about trips that they have gone on. I learned a Sicilian card game called Scopa too.
Saturday Joe, Sue, Vinnie, and I headed down south to a town called Syracusa. There, we saw Greek ruins, which was pretty cool. There was an old Greek theater that was pretty intact, as well as a garden area, and remains of a greek quarry. There were lots of stray cats there for me to pet, I love to play with strays haha. We also visited catacombs right in the town, which was cool but creepy. There were areas were there were family graves, nun graves, and still some remnants of frescos on the walls. Afterwards, we headed to the marina area and walked around some. I had a delicious cannoli. Then it was back towards home, where we stopped to get something to eat at a restaurant that Sue and Joe go to a lot.
Sunday, we started out towards Mount Etna, the biggest active volcano in Europe! Our plan was for Sue and Joe to drop us off and then to hike around the mountain. But boy, did I underestimate the steepness of the biggest volcano in Europe. We drove way up, and then began our journey up. But after about a half hour, I decided that I was going to die and we had to turn around. Vinnie didn't seem too upset, but I know he could of kept going if I wasn't holding him back haha. We also stopped into caves that you can crawl into on the mountain. That was really cool, I think it may have just been an old abandoned well that had entrances in it. There were also models having a photo shoot near the caves, so that was silly to see. After we got home, I made an apple crumb with apples that we had bought earlier from a stand. After dinner, we played Mexican Train, which was of course lots of fun, and watched football. The neighbors came over later on, and hung out and watched us play dominos too.
Monday, our last day in Sicily, we slept in a little and then went down to the army base. We had lunch with Joe in the dining hall, and then they took us over to the grocery store/shopping area where we picked up a couple American things (Oreos and Mac n Cheese haha). Then it was to the airport! It was a fun trip, and it was nice to see some family over here in Italy! Only about 3 more weeks till I come home, and John Paul is arriving for his visit tomorrow! So lots of exciting things are happening, and I'm sure these last 3 week will fly by.
