Tuesday
Today we left the hotel around 8.30 am and headed by bus to the south coast of Iceland.
Iceland has a size of 132000 square km and is 300 km x430 km in size.
We had a brief stop at the Queen of the lookouts as the road came off the plateau to the valley below which many many years ago was sea
We passed the Seljalandsfoss waterfall but as it was raining we elected to return later in the day when the weather improved . This is referred to a the bridal veil falls.
We passed another large waterfall Skogafoss and then had lunch at Skogasafn where there is a transport museum. We had lovely lamb soup and pancake with jam and cream
After lunch we went to the Solheimajokull Glacier. We walked for about 45 minutes to the edge of the glacier where we put on crampons on our shoes and walked using them and a ice pick out onto the glacier. It was a volcanic glacier and the volcano last erupted in April 2010. Hence the glacier was mainly black and not white as we expected
After a further bus ride of 90 minutes we were back at the hotel and we went and had fish stew for dinner
Tomorrow we will see geysers mud pools and go snowmobiling
