Hi peeps
How are you all? i'm still doing good although now I'm sporting a cold thanks to the drastic change in temperature. Having left NY and Canada only 2 weeks ago where i was loving up the snow, I've now encountered temperatures up to 78 F - (conversion genius' welcome here) thus I've been pulling out the t-shirts and vest tops left, right and centre. ;) There goes my master plan to avoid the intense heat...
Following some interesting transportation issues, I finally met up with my Uncle last week and got promptly informed that I wasn't truly African / Liberian as I don't eat pepper / hot sauce with my food. I kinda got the impression that my family were somewhat disgusted with this fact and proceeded to let the whole world know ( Thanks Archima) . With this in mind, they did get even with me when I mistook what I thought was tomatoe sauce for very very very hot pepper sauce. water has never tasted so good Needless to say, I still don't eat pepper!!!!
Phily also has the Big Red Bus tour in similar to London and NY and I got to see the Rocky steps, liberty bell, penns landing (where the first irish settlers landed), museum of natural science where the current exhibiition is named the "scoop on poop" (tee hee) and the King Tut exhibition / planetarium presentation (recommended). Philadelphia / Pennsylvania is not only known for the "Philly Cheese Steak" (which I thought until not too long ago was Philly Cheesecake yet very yummy nonetheless) but also for the official "Amish" community. They really are very hard working and family oriented. The quality of food is reknowned (less my opinion) and they even supply something called Turducket - turkey, duck and chicken - which I wasn't able to be privy to as they weren't able to get the duck this time of year but very cool!!!
The most amazing thing during my time here though must have been my first live basketball game. My cousin surprised me with one of the most exciting events I've ever been to - It was fab! I always thought i wasn't very competitive but one night at a ball game has suggested something completely different - "Go home" "You don't belong here" "We're gonna school, you!!!" Yes,those were my exact words. I couldn't belive it myself either;-) 76ers beat the Celtics. Apparently Philly fans even boo their own team and have been known to suck the passion out of their own team stars - eek!!!
I did get to meet a not so heartless friend of my cousin's who's a native Philadelphian who shared some lingo to get the simplest of us by:
"Man, you drawing" - friend you're making a scene!!!
"You, know the john, that the john who went over to the john" - substitute thingy / name of friend for John.
When the latter lingo is used, it is almost impossible to work out what the two people in conversation are talking about as only they know what "john" is.
Philly - Fun, and real!!!predominately ethnocentral even downtown. As Philadelphia is where today's america started, it's architecture is very grand and hellenic - oldschool!!! but quite cosmopolitan at the same time.
Bring on DC.
If anything very hellenic too. The nations capital is very big and monumental. Everythign is very spaced out. my legs aren't too happy bout my change in transportation during my tour but I did get to see the White house - from a fence 10-ft tall, cherry blossoms everywhere (all very proud), FBI building, US Capitol and Supreme court (I ave a batchelors in Psych with Crim - wat do you expect)? all very beautiful buildings - from outside - as I found out you have to go see your senator to be able to have internal access to any of these places and even book like a month in advance. The use of metal detectors and guards everywhere somewat reminded me of days goneby in US customs - eek!!! Interestingly enough got to see some guy protesting for hours outside Union Station and there was not a single intervention from the police despite being only down the road from the supreme court - America (nation of conflicting standards to no end).
Last night, got a second wind of my baller legs. Managed to get $10 ticket to the Wizards vs Bobcats game- result!! although, I do I think the nation's capital should really stick at what they're good at - charging high prices and running the country - not playing Basketball but hey, who am I to criticize. some would say I shouldn't give up my day job - but hey, I don't have one - he he!! Bobcats won, Wizards lost.
Must say adios now as family beckons. Am off to Texas tomorrow night for a week or so and then Vegas baby yeah!!!!
Wish you were here
G-lady!!
