Off we were on our first day of exploring the States.
Jenneen, to start of our day, took us to a delicious American breakfast. ... served us a very generous portion of french toast with bananas, tattertots, 3 eggs per person. We didn't come remotely close to finishing it, got to love the US of A!
This was followed by attempts to visit my old University which took a swift detour when I couldn't find it my old neighbourhood and we had to use a TomTom... whoopsidaisies! We got there in the end. After driving around, showing Q where I slept, ate and studied (or at least my attempts thereof) took the better part of the morning. We drove around at first but decided a quick walk through the campus would give a better feel for the place. Q, at least, seemed impressed by it all.
Next on the program was a quick visit to my aunt and uncle in dainty Rockport, we managed to give them at least around 24 hours of warning but were welcome to drop by my Uncle working in Manchester before moving on to Rockport. Now I don't want to say an hours drive over US highways is interesting per se, but if you've never done it before it at least becomes somewhat entertaining... or at least it did when we got out of the traffic jam before heading onto the I95. Reaching the town of Manchester and the supposed location of my uncles office we asked around if anyone had seen him. "Syd?" "No... Syb!" the blond girl from the store next door apologised for my uncle not being there but the issue was quickly resolved by Q banging on the windows of the office and my uncle showing his head around the corner of the door.
Unfortunately there was still work to be done (by him of course) and after a coffee across the street we followed the ocean road along typical american houses to get to the extremely touristy Rockport. I know I haven't ever been there in the summer and I knew it was more touristy in the summer but this was busy beyond belief. Clear blue skies, a burning sun and crowds of people did give us the real "summer vacation" feel. We walked around the piers and picked up a few lobster rolls on the way as a snack. We both enjoyed this idyllic seaside town, though the contagious enthusiasm perhaps helped a bit.
Already late due to the crowds blocking our way on every turn we reached my uncles and aunts place around half 2 and after the (dutch) greetings we were off to the boat minutes later. At the quayside we were joined by Frits and his son. Two coolers full of drinks and after watching Syb row out to the boat to bring it in we were ready to go! I won't elaborate too much... the pictures speak for themselves, but we made a nice long trip around Cape Ann. Passing through the river and canal before going round on the ocean side. Unfortunately the pizza we intended to pick up would take much too long... and there is also apparently a state law on not wearing shirts in the premises of a restaurant, who knew? After having changed and picked up our stuff we decided on joining the rest of the group for a delicious BBQ overlooking the sea. Not a bad way to end the day!
On the way back we picked up Jenneen from her work, who generously had lended us her car, and we chilled for a bit at her place watching "Get Hard", drinking rhubarb alcohol and falling asleep on the couch :)
