Jonny's South American Adventure!
Well we finally left Bariloche on Tuesday and caught the bus up to Mendoza, arriving early Wednesday. It was only when we started trying to find a hostel that it dawned on any of us that it was Easter, and because of that finding a bed for the night was not at all easy. We managed to sort out a place for Wednesday night, but were getting worried after we rang literally every other hostel in town and nowhere had a bed for Thursday. Thankfully, the hostel we were at said that we could sleep on the couch for free! Whilst not an entirely attractive option it was the best we wee gonna get! Wednesday turned into a bit of a drinking session as it was the Last Supper Part II as the girls were leaving on Thursday. The local Malbeck wine was flowing - at less than a quid for a 1.25 litre bottle, it would have been rude not to! We also managed to avoid a bit of a scam where a girl we spent the day with (called Octatvia!) nearly got her bagged nicked. Thursday consisted of a leisurely mornng before we went on a wine tour visiting a couple of th elocal wineries and enjoying some wine tasting - I'm a bit of a connoisseur now! After saying bye to the girls (finally a bit of peace and quiet!) as we dropped them off at the bus station, we went back to the hostel where quite out of the blue I started being sick - and before anyone asks I hadn't even been drinking (much). I left Karl and Lex to it as I tried to get some sleep whilst music was blaring out in the common room, needless to say I struggled. Friday was just a doss and doze day, made frustrating by watching United draw, and then we said bye to Lex as we went to catch our bus. It felt really wierd walking to the station as just the two of us after doing so much as a group of fuve - Lex was almost crying!
We arrived in Salta on Saturday and mooched around a bit, taking in the nice atmosphere around the parks and ponds which were lined with market stalls and vendors selling what looke dlike delicious cakes, and then went out on the rip again with a couple of guys who were in our dorm. Once the local churches emptied after midnight mass, things started picking up and the talent on display was considerable! We got chatting to a few Argentinean girls until the bar we were in shut, at which point (around 6am) it was time for bed. For me anyway. Karl wandered off and ended up going to an after hours bar and finally got in at 10am - the time at which we were supposed to be checking out! Thankfully the hostel wasn't strictly run so we all slept in, I finally got up around 4pm, couldn't get any sense out of Ballard and so went to nurse my hangover on the cable car to the top of the hill, offering really nice views out over the city. After finally waking Karl up at 8pm(!) we got some food and caught our midnight coach to the boarder.
Bolivia awaits!
