Carley who is Peter Kershaw's research assistant told us at our early morning briefing a few minutes ago that a Polar Bear smashed her kitchen window last night just after she left the kitchen and walked into another part of their log cabin not far from here. It got away before they were able to shoot it. It was obviously trying to break into the cabin for food at the bears around here havent eaten for many months. Makes us all even more Bear aware. We are constantly on the lookout for Polar Bears.
The Bear took out the enrire window that was triple glazed and worth close to $CAD 900. They are very hard to replace up here because it is so isolated. Also, there is no Bear insurance because last year a Bear took out 40 windows in some cabins in a Nunavut community north of here that was formally the Northwest Territories. Bars are really the only way to go as well as sleeping with a loaded shotgun. Carley rides to work on a quad bike at the moment with a loaded shotgun. She is a bit vunerable to Bear attack. This will be replaced with a snow mobile in a little while.
The snow is now falling and we break the ice in ponds in the morning when we go out to collect data. The temperature is around 2 degrees and falling.
