April's Travels
Hello all,
A postcard to tell you all about San Fran. We got there Saturday morning after driving from Monteray. We drove straight into San Fran which was dead scary because there are loads of one way streets, you can't turn left and you drive along with the trams. OMG!!
My sense of direction is officially non existent. I can read maps but if i walk along a street and go into a shop, when i come out i'll head off in the wrong direction!! So i was not the most helpful. Finally managed to park and went to the apple store (they have free internet). In there we booked into a hotel and then drove over to it. We picked a nice one, really friendly and cute. Parked up, got a bagel from the cafe and then i chased Steve out of the hotel to do a walking tour of the city. We walked through Chinatown which was cool, saw two little ladies making fortune cookies in an age old factory. Walked all the way to Fisherman's Wharf where the Pier's are. They have the elephant seals there and the Bay Cruises under the Golden Gate Bridge and to Alcatraz. We went to book some tours and managed to get the final Alcatraz trip for the day we were leaving. After having a little discusision on the rest of the trip and what we were doing when we figured we could squeeze Alcatraz in even though we were supposed to be leaving that day to head for Vegas at lunch time.
Later on we went out for dinner at the Stinking Rose in the little Italy area of San Fran with Becky and Mike. Stinking Rose named after the fact that everything has a high concentration of garlic!! We stunk! After we went for a couple of drinks kind of as a pre Birthday night celebration for me!!
Sunday we went on the Bay Cruise. It's a boat ride out under the Golden Gate bridge and then around Alcatraz (just to see the island, not get on it). It was really cool. Afterwards we went back to Little Italy again for lunch, then went back to get the car. We manged to get ourselves across the Golden Gate Bridge which was really good to drive, then we queued along a really steep hill (it was so scary looking behind you which was down the hill) and then drove down the crookedest street in the world. Afterwards we headed back to the hotel and managed to get ourselves on the Bay Bridge heading straight out of San Fran across the ocean. Completely non intentional, did i mention the navigator was me....cheesy grin!
Monday......my Birthday!! The day all about me. We got up and went for a little shop in Macy's. Steve bought me a top with lots of fruit on (in preparation for Vegas and the fruit machine) and then we had lunch in The Cheesecake Factory. The Balcony where our table was looked over San Fran and Union Square. It was so beautiful. We had soup and of course cheesecake, pics attached!!
Then we went on the boat ride to Alcatraz. This was so cool. Alcatraz for those of you who haven't heard of it is an island in the San Fran bay aka The Rock. The prison on there was in operation until 1963 and housed such criminals as Al Capone and The Birdman. It's really cool to visit. You fo in the cell house and the cells, see Al Capone's cell and the isolation room, gun gallery and dining hall. All quite eerie because it's so secluded. Definitely a highlight of the trip, especially the part where we got literally splattered with seagull poo just before we got back on the boat. It's ok, we're heading for Vegas so it's good luck right!!
After the trip we got ready to leave San Fran, after faffing about and going to see a street of Victorian houses which is used lots in films we managed to head out of San Fran about 10pm, oops!!
My birthday was such a good day, i got lots of cards that Steve brought out from people. Thanks to everyone for the pressies and cards, they really made it. Love pressies tee hee. With all the birthday money i did a helicopter ride of The Grand Canyon so thanks to those who sent it and for all the other goodies. Loved them, thank you, thank you!!
We headed out of San Fran for Death Valley and Vegas. We made about 2-3 hours then i was drifting off to sleep so we stopped en route in a motel. Up again at 9 and on the road again.....
