So...Antarctica has never been high on my bucket list. Why? Well, 1) it's a very long way to travel- Southernmost point on earth, actually. 2) It's very cold, even in summer, and when I think of getting away from Maine winters I tend to dream sand beaches and warm water 3) To get there, you have to cross the Southern Ocean...by boat..and that more, often than not, means howling winds and ridiculously high seas. So...Antarctica has never been high on my bucket list. Why? Well, 1) it's a very long way to travel- Southernmost point on earth, actually. 2) It's very cold, even in summer, and when I think of getting away from Maine winters I tend to dream sand beaches and warm water 3) To get there, you have to cross the Southern Ocean...by boat..and that more, often than not, means howling winds and ridiculously high seas. I am what you call a fairweather sailor. This upcoming scenario is not only not appealing, it's downright daunting. Nevertheless, I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and when my mother invited my partner and me along on the trip that apparently WAS on her bucket list, I accepted with appropriate enthusiasm. The "expedition" is organized through Lindblad/National Geographic and we will be aboard the National Geographic Explorer for 23 days.
