Hello from Switzerland!
As we began to descend into Basel on our Easyjet flight, we were reminded how much we both love this beautiful, scenic country, even if it is crazy expensive!
The bus took us to the bahnof train station and just two blocks walk later we were at our YMCA hostel, which became top 2 best hostels we've ever stayed in. The kitchen was enormous and immaculate, with sensor cooktops, 2 sinks and every kind of pot and pan you could ever need. The toilets and bathrooms, in typical Swiss style, were squeaky clean and it seemed like everything was sensor operated like some futuristic movie!
As we cooked dinner that night in our star trek kitchen, we had an interesting encounter with an... "interesting" person. We left our dirty dishes (all 2 of them) out on the counter for maybe 8 minutes while we scoffed our pesto mushroom and cherry tomatoes mmm. When we returned we were confronted by a very feminine mute who seemed to be excessively outraged by our uncleanliness, as he waved his arms aggressively and indicated that we should have washed up one bowl that was sitting near the sink. After we gathered what his problem was we waved him off only to have him continue his silent rant a minute later when he appeared to grab for Nat. This sent Ant into a bit of a protective rage as he used two choice words to advise the "guy" to go forth and multiply.
Our second and final day in Basel was a great day. We explored some of the old town with the town hall and cathedral, and then ended the afternoon dozing in the sun in a park for hours and getting some much needed relaxation. That night we experienced one of the worst elements of hostels; shared dorm rooms with bad snorers. The huge dude above Ant was the worst of 3 snorers in the room, and his snoring fell somewhere between an incoming train and someone constantly hocking up a bucket of mucus. The result was a very disjointed sleep and tired heads as we headed for our next destination; Zurich and a family stop with Nat's cousin Emma, her partner Chris and their newly born son Oliver!
